Advertising the role

All posts over nine months in duration, and those that are likely to become permanent, must be advertised as part of the university's commitment to equality of opportunity. The Online Recruitment Request form will ask you to provide draft advert wording for your role.

Drafting an advert

The job advertisement is the point at which a candidate will initially learn of the vacancy and make a decision of whether to apply based on the information provided.    The advertisement is therefore key in attracting suitable candidates for the role and selling the opportunity to work at York St John to them.

The suggested format of the job advertisment includes -

  • An introduction to the university
  • Summary of the overall purpose of the role
  • The key tasks / duties that the postholder will undertake
  • The knowledge, key skills and behaviours required for the role

HR will add wording to inform the candidates of the benefits available to them and instructions detailing how to apply.

Please refer to our guidance on Drafting a job advertisement - guidance for managers (DOCx, 32.7KB) for further advice.

Duration of advert

Usually posts are advertised for two weeks to an internal and external audience.  Where it is felt apporpriate to advertise to an internal audience only, for example if the role is a development opportunity, the role would be open for one week only.

If an identical post was advertised within the previous four months and an appointable candidate identified it is not necessary to re-advertise.
