Identifying the Selection Criteria

The Selection Criteria is a list of the role requirements that the candidates will be assessed against at each stage of the recruitment process.

The Online Recruitment Request will ask you to select a number of requirements for the role that you wish to assess the candidates against during the selection process (this includes both shortlisting and interview stages). The requirements for the role are listed within the Person Specification and grouped under the headings -

  • Education / Qualifications
  • Knowledge and Experience
  • Skills / Attributes
  • Behaviours

Selection criteria at shortlisting stage (the questions that the candidates will be asked to respond to when completing their application form)

  • Please use the Person Specification to decide which requirements you would like to assess the candidates against at shortlisting stage.
  • When considering how many requirements to include please be mindful of the level of the role. We recommend that candidates are asked to respond to a maximum of six requirements at shortlisting stage.
  • Please phrase each requirement as a question that can be included in the application, for example if you are looking to assess team working skills this may be phrased as ‘Please provide an example of a time when you have worked as part of team to achieve an objective’
  • When applying, the candidate will be asked to provide statements in response to each question

Selection criteria at interview stage (the questions that the candidates will be asked to respond to during the interview)

  • Please use the Person Specification to decide which requirements you would like to assess the candidates against at interview stage.
  • When considering how many requirements to include please be mindful of the level of the role and the time that is allocated for interview.
  • Please phrase each requirement as a question that can be asked at interview, for example if you are looking to assess customer service skills this may be phrased as ‘Please provide an example of a time when you provided excellent customer service’
  • The candidate will be asked to respond to each question at interview
  • Question banks are available for certain grades – please contact the Resourcing and Onboarding Team if you wish to view these.

You may wish to assess a certain requirement at both shortlisting and interview stages in order to explore the candidates' capability in a particular area in greater depth.

You may also decide to include additional selection methods to assess certain requirements, for example, a test may be helpful to determine a candidate's level of competency using Excel.  Please visit our guidance regarding Selection Methods for further information.
