While we hope you stay healthy and well whilst studying, from time to time it is inevitable that you may be ill or need medical assistance. Below is information on both University and external services that are available to you during your time at York St John.
Important update from the Student Health Centre
Another reminder to all our first year students under 25 that if you have NOT had your Meningitis ACWY vaccination please visit the Health Centre to get protected. The nurse has offered to squeeze people in between her patients to avoid you having to wait.
There have been confirmed cases with students in York, and the effects of Meningitis are very severe. The vaccine only takes 2 minutes and is a lot better than a lifetime of health issues.
York St John has a health centre on campus which is part of York Medical Group and you can register with them prior to your arrival at University. Doctors' surgeries are held regularly and a practice nurse holds a daily clinic on a range of services.
If you choose to register with them you will still be able to visit your normal doctor at your home address but you may have to be registered as a temporary resident. Visit the Student Health Centre website to find out more.
You can register by going to the health centre (Quad East, Lord Mayors Walk) and picking up a registration pack. You can also pre-register online.
Please don't wait until you are unwell to register - we need time to get your details from your existing GP and you will not be able to book an appointment if you are not registered.
You can call the health centre on the following numbers:
Campus surgery (Quad East, Lord Mayors Walk): 01904 439101
Monkgate surgery: 01904 439100
For urgent advice and treatment when the surgery is closed, phone the surgery on the usual number and an answer phone message will advise you of an alternative number to dial.
A receptionist in the emergency call centre will answer your call. They will either:
- arrange for you to speak to a doctor or nurse
- invite you to attend the centre to be seen by the doctor
- arrange a home visit if you are too ill to visit the centre
