Changes to our services
We want to help you access our services as safely as possible.
Under current government guidance the Library is open for browsing, borrowing and study space.
This page will tell you how services now work, what safety measures are in place and what we expect from you.
Our web pages are being regularly reviewed and updated to reflect the latest information on our services and their availability. If you have questions please email us at email@example.com
We are currently operating revised opening hours.
We strongly encourage the continued use of face coverings over your nose and mouth for the duration of any visit you make to the Library.
You are able to browse for items on the shelves in the Library and borrow these using our self-issue machines. In most cases ebooks are accessible instantly and we recommend using ebook versions of our books where these are available. You may also find that Box of Broadcasts offers instant access to some films and TV series.
If you are unable to travel to campus to collect print items, you can register for our postal loans service.
Books can be returned on campus or via our free postal returns service using Clicksit.
All loanable books:
- Can be borrowed for 2 weeks
- Are automatically renewed every 7 days unless a reservation is placed on the item (at which point you will be notified it must be returned).
After an item has been renewed 26 times, you will also be asked to return the item to the Library.
Fines are charged for overdue items that other borrowers need or when the renewal limit is met. Our current fines are £1 per day for books, CDs, and DVDs, and £10 per day for IT equipment checked out through Media Loans.
There will be a mixture of open access study space (no booking required) and bookable study space for those who would like to guarantee a space.
If you would like to book your study space you can do this online before travelling to the Library. Please make sure you check in on arrival. If you do not take up your space or check in within 15 minutes it will become available on the booking system for others to use.
There will be cleaning stations in the Library so that you can clean study spaces before and after you use them.
Laptops can be borrowed from laptop lockers in various locations on our York campus.
Laptops can be borrowed for 3 days and are not renewable (please note: Haxby Road laptops can be borrowed for 4 hours and are not renewable).
Reduced contact points
We have reduced the need to use touchscreens. You can borrow books by scanning your student card. We have adapted our printers to release print jobs automatically after scanning your student card.
Our Library and Learning staff are available in the Library and online to help you. Please treat our staff and other Library users with respect.
Hand sanitiser and cleaning
Hand sanitiser will be provided at the Library entrance and at locations inside. Our Cleaning teams are keeping busy areas clean during the day. Cleaning stations will be provided so that you can clean study spaces before and after you use them.
Soft furniture like sofas and beanbags are available but please be aware of fellow library users and respect their space and safety.
The student kitchen on the second floor and the hot water tap on the ground floor are open and available for use.
