Reopening Fountains Learning Centre

We want to help you access our services as safely as possible.

We are developing online and contactless ways for you to use your library. We are making changes to library spaces and how we work so that you can keep getting the support you need. This page will tell you what we are planning to do, when we are planning to do it, and what safety measures will be in place.

Government advice about libraries reopening from Saturday 4 July applies to public libraries only. As a university library we are matching the university’s phased approach to reopening the campus.

If you have any questions please email us at

From Monday 20 July - Phase 0

Our Estates and Cleaning teams will prepare the library so that we can make more services available to you.

The library building will remain closed at this time.

From Monday 10 August - Phase 1

We will launch our no-contact Click and Collect service.

This service allows you to order print-only books and collect them from the front of the Fountains Learning Centre. You will be able to return books using our external book return box.

We will reintroduce our Postal Loans service for students and staff living outside York. We will also be extending this service to students and staff who live in York but are unable to come onto campus because they are shielding or self-isolating.

From Tuesday 1 September - Phase 2

Fountains Learning Centre will reopen. We are finalising our opening hours and these will be published soon.

To ensure that everyone can enjoy the library safely we are making the following changes to our services.

Book quarantine

Books will be quarantined for 72 hours after they are returned to reduce the chance of contamination and you will not be able to look for items on the shelves in the library. You can still look for books online using our Library Catalogue and you can order print-only books from our Click and Collect service. No one will be touching items unless they are being borrowed.

Study spaces

Study spaces will need to be booked before use and only 1 student can use them at a time.

There will be less spaces available, this includes PC study spaces. There will be cleaning stations in the library so that you can clean study spaces before and after you use them.

Reduced contact points

To control the spread of infection we will reducing the need to use touchscreens. You will be able to borrow books by just scanning your student card. We will adapt our printers to release print jobs automatically after scanning your student card.

Physical distancing

Our Library and Learning staff will still be in the library to help you. We will ask you to observe physical distancing and stand behind any screens we have at our desks.

Hand sanitiser and cleaning

Hand sanitiser will be provided at the library entrance and at locations inside. Our Cleaning teams will keep busy areas clean during the day. Cleaning stations will be provided so that you can clean study spaces before and after you use them.

The Student Kitchen

The Student Kitchen will be closed.

Soft furniture like sofas and beanbags will not be available.
