Your research identity
An ORCID iD is a unique identifier for researchers which can be added to research outputs to ensure that your work is accurately identified as yours and can be distinguished from that of other researchers.
Your ORCID account is managed by you. Self-register for free.
Connect to ORCID
You can now connect your ORCID account to RaY. By connecting your ORCID and RaY accounts, you can share and update both accounts together. You can import your records from ORCID to RaY, and anything you add to RaY can also be added to your ORCID account.
Note: to connect your ORCID to RaY, you must first be logged into your RaY account. From here, select ‘Connect to ORCID’ on the menu bar, and give permission for the connection.
Why get an ORCID iD?
- An ORCID iD ensures that you get credit for all your work and makes it easy for others to find your research.
- An ORCID iD stays the same throughout your career. If you move to another institution or change your name, you can still use the same ORCID account.
- An ORCID iD may be required by research funders and publishers.
- When you have an ORCID account it is easier to keep track of and report on your research.
How do I get an ORCID iD and where do I use it?
You can self-register at orcid.org or use the ‘Connect to ORCID’ option when logged into RaY. Once you have an ORCID account and it’s linked with your RaY account, your research outputs recorded in RaY will update your ORCID account too. You should include your ORCID iD on grant applications or when submitting an article for publication (where a funder of publisher has integrated with the ORCID registry). You can also add it to your CV, email signature, personal website etc.
What does an ORCID iD look like?
Your ORCID iD is a 16-digit number. You should not shorten the number by removing zeroes as the full number is always required.
The number is part of a resolvable internet address with the structure:
Your ORCID iD is visible to everyone and is displayed on your ORCID account below your name. You can choose privacy settings for all other information on your ORCID account.
I already have an ORCID account, what should I do?
If you have already joined ORCID, please make sure you connect it to your RaY account by using the ‘Connect to ORCID’ option when logged into RaY. You should also add your York St John email address to your ORCID account.
What happens to my ORCID account and iD if I leave York St John?
Your ORCID account and iD is uniquely linked to you and not an institution. You take your ORCID with you. You will need to update any email addresses you have on your ORCID account after you move.
