All undergraduate students receive financial support through the YSJ Aspire Card.
The YSJ Aspire Scheme has been set up in conjunction with the John Smiths Group to help you make the very best of your time at University. You will be able to use funds on your Aspire card to purchase course related materials on a dedicated website.
Who an Aspire card is for?
All full and part time home and international students enrolled onto the first, second or third year, the foundation year or the top-up year of an undergraduate honours degree will receive an Aspire card.
Part-time students will need to contact the Student Funding Advice Team to ensure they are financially assessed by the University, due to not all data being received from external sources.
Receiving your Aspire card
To receive your Aspire card you must register on the Aspire website. You will need your university email address and password to register.
Once you have arrived at York St John and are fully enrolled your account will be updated with your funds. You can collect your Aspire Card once you have completed the final stage of enrolment during Welcome Week.
Full time students will receive £100 on their Aspire card. Part-time students will receive £50. Your card will be ready to use immediately.
Additional funding for card
Home students whose household income is below £25,000 will also receive an additional £400. This will be loaded on to your account from February onwards.
Using your card
You can spend your Aspire funds online at the John Smiths store, and students with the additional £400 can also spend this in the catering outlets around Some of the items you will be able to spend your funds on include:
- Books – reading lists are provided on the John Smiths website
- Stationery and office materials
- Art supplies
- Electronics and accessories
- Programme specific clothing/uniforms
- SU clubs and societies memberships
The items you can purchase with your card may vary depending on course.
Topping up your fund
You can top up your fund through your online account. Friends and family can also add funds to your account for you in this way.
At the end of each academic year your funds will roll over and you can spend them the following academic year.
Any funds added to your account by the University will be available for you to spend until the 31 July following the completion of your programme. Any personal funds that you have added will continue to be available to you indefinitely.
There is a £5 charge for a replacement card should you lose or damage your original.
