Applying for a Research degree

Find out how to apply for a Research degree at York St John University

We accept new research students on 1 October, 1 February or 1 June each year (or 1 January for professional doctorates only). We recommend that you make your application at least three months before your preferred start date.

To undertake a Research degree at York St John University, you'll need to find out if there is an academic supervisor able to support you in your field. You'll work closely with them throughout your degree to make sure your project is answering valuable questions in your field of choice.

To find an academic supervisor, you'll need to contact the appropriate Research Lead for the subject you wish to study. With them, you can discuss your research and ensure that the content of your research proposal can be supported.

When you are confident that your research proposal can be supported by academic staff within one of the schools, you can then apply for our Research degrees using the online application form.

To complete your application you will need:

  • Details of your qualifications.
  • Your employment and work experience history.
  • Contact details for your referees.
  • A 1,500 word Research Proposal (not including references), except for applicants to Professional Doctorates, who should provide a Personal Statement of around 500 words to support their application

Once you submit your application and we have received your references, it will be reviewed by our Admissions Team. Then, when Admissions Team has verified your references and qualifications, your application will be sent to the appropriate school Research Lead who will assess the full application and may invite you for interview. If you are successful, your application will be sent to the Research Degree Sub Committee who will make the final decision on your application.

Once a decision has been made, the result of your application will be sent to you by email including any conditions that we require you to meet as part of your offer. Your acceptance letter will include a reply slip which you can return via post or email to accept or decline your place.

We will be in touch by email and post before you join us to make sure you have everything you need before you start - make sure you give us permission to contact you so that we can get this important information to you.
