Why choose YSJ?
Reasons to come to York St John University for postgraduate study
A postgraduate degree opens a world of opportunity to you, leading to more refined and well paid graduate opportunities. At York St John, we will support you to build your professional skills and expand your knowledge, helping you stand out from the crowd.
Research that makes a difference
From shining a light on environmental risks in Africa, through to exploring new ways to understand and support autistic children, our research focuses on improving the world around us. In the latest Research Excellence Framework (2014), 30% of our research was found to be world-leading or internationally excellent. Our academics will help you to focus your research interests with real challenges that require impactful answers.
We know that as a postgraduate student, you may also have a job, a young family or other commitments to juggle alongside your study. We believe that education is for everybody and work hard to make our postgraduate courses accessible to you, whatever your circumstances. Flexible part time options are available for the majority of our courses, but even as a full time student, you may only be on campus a few times a week.
You are part of an inspiring community
We remain committed to our small student cohorts. You will be known as an individual by your tutors and they will offer you excellent support, even beyond your studies. We want you to feel valued, to contribute to the distinctive atmosphere on campus and to be the best that you can be.
We have links to universities and other learning institutions across the world, including in Europe, India, the USA, Canada, Australia, and across Asia, including China. This presents opportunities to collaborate on shared international interests, draw on a wider pool of expertise and make connections with people who share your academic interests across the globe.
We have invested £46 million in our campus over the last 10 years, including high spec laboratories and learning spaces, in addition to a 57-acre sports park. In September 2021, we open the doors to our brand new Creative Centre. Spanning 3 floors, this purpose built creative space will contain a 210 seat theatre and new teaching facilities for our creative and computing courses.
We understand the challenges of postgraduate study and our dedicated Graduate Centre provides specialised study space for you to focus on your studies. We also have our Learning Centre, which is available to students 24 hours a day.
We are proud of our relationships with local and national businesses and organisations. These partners regularly work with us to ensure our curriculum is addressing contemporary issues in the respective field and your learning is applied to areas where it matters the most. We are renowned for our sense of community and spirit of collaboration, both on campus and across the city.
Our contacts within the business industry offer advice, networking opportunities and experience to help you get your own businesses started. We offer business workshops, advice on funding and can provide information about affordable workspaces and business networks located within the city.
We pride ourselves on delivering a personal approach to learning through the provision of a supportive environment and small class sizes. This applies across all of our courses, from foundation level through to PhD study. The success of this ethos is reflected in our high satisfaction ratings.
Our Student Support Teams are experienced in addressing the needs of our postgraduate students. Our library is open 24 hours a day, 7 days a week during term time, so if late nights or early mornings work best for you there is nothing stopping you accessing resources or finding a quiet place to work.
