Eating & Drinking

With allegedly a different pub or bar for every day of the year, there is certainly no shortage of options for top places to eat and drink in York.

So whether you are planning a big night out, a special afternoon tea when the family visit, or wanting to grab the best cheap eat in town, here is some insider information to get you started.

Coffee and Cake

On the doorstep: step off the campus onto Gillygate and there is a whole host of independent cafés serving up top quality coffee and homemade treats that you just can’t resist, including Bakes & Co, Osbournes @ 68, Rae & Web and Bistro Guy. For those serious about their coffee, go to the Perky Peacock and Spring Espresso to get your fix! Brew & Brownie on Museum Street is popular amongst our students as a fab place for an American pancake brunch, lunch (avocado smash on toast!), an unusual range of cakes and of course brownies to die for.

Afternoon Tea

The world-famous Bettys tearooms are on every York tourist’s to-do list. Beautiful hand-crafted cakes, fabulous friendly service and opulent surroundings make this a very memorable experience that should be enjoyed at least once.

Eating out

The Lamb & Lion is an old English inn adjoining Bootham Bar. Its intimate nooks and crannies make it a cosy place for a winter evening meal or Sunday lunch and it boasts a beer garden for spectacular Minster views in the summer. No. 8 Bistro on Gillygate has a seasonal menu using the best local produce. One for the foodies. Bill’s is open throughout the day on Coney Street and they also offer a takeaway service.

Pubs and Bars

When it comes to cocktails Evil Eye on Stonegate, Bobo Lobo on Little Stonegate and Bora Bora on Back Swinegate are favourites amongst our students. For a traditional Yorkshire pub head to The Golden Fleece, The Guy Fawkes Inn, The Habit and Pivni.
