Advice for applicants and offer holders
This page contains important information and updates for students who have applied to study at York St John University this September.
Due to the coronavirus (COVID-19) outbreak, we understand you may have questions about starting university this year. This page contains information and advice to support you during this time.
Key information for applicants and offer holders
Your Student ID Number
To apply for accommodation or request changes to your application, you may need your Student ID Number. This is a 9 digit code and can be found at the top of your offer email. If you are unable to find your Student ID Number, please contact our Admissions Team.
Understanding your offer
We have removed the academic requirements from most undergraduate courses starting in September 2020.
If you are a UK applicant and have applied to us already you will not need to meet any academic requirements to receive an unconditional offer to study with us.
You may still need to meet other conditions such as DBS checks. Please check your original offer for information about these additional requirements. It should be possible to meet these conditions remotely over the next few months.
If you are applying for a course in the following area your application has not as yet been confirmed.
- Occupational Therapy
- Biomedical Science
The government has asked universities not to make any more early confirmations. Because of this it is unlikely that we will be able to confirm any more offers before we see results. Rest assured that we will treat remaining conditional offers positively in August when we can see results.
Most results will be issued on Thursday 13 August.
If your offer has already been confirmed we will not be reversing that decision.
For non-UK applicants we will review your application on a case-by-case basis.
Replying to offers
There is no need for applicants to feel under pressure to reply quickly to their offers. UCAS have moved the deadline for most students to reply to their offers to Thursday 18 June. They will be in contact with applicants to confirm this and to provide updates on a regular basis.
If you now have confirmed offers showing as unconditional status on UCAS, you will be able to choose our offer as a firm (first) choice or an insurance (second) choice, or decline the offer completely. If we have removed the academic conditions from your offer, this will still apply if you choose us as your insurance choice.
York St John University will not seek to pressure you into accepting our offer.
Once you have decided where you want to accept, you can make your decisions using your UCAS Track page.
Applying for accommodation
You can now apply for your accommodation via the Accommodation Hub.
The deadline for applying for your accommodation is Sunday 12 July.
From Monday 13 July, we will send out accommodation offers to everyone who has York St John as a firm choice.
The deadline for accepting your accommodation offer and paying your deposit is Sunday 26 July.
Deferring your place
If you wish to defer your place, please email our Admissions team with:
- Confirmation that you wish to defer your place
- Your Student ID or UCAS ID number
We will confirm by email that your place has been deferred.
It is possible to change courses if the new course you wish to study has the same entry requirements.
To request a change of course, please email our Admissions team with:
- Confirmation of the new course you would like to study
- Your Student ID or UCAS ID number
We will confirm by email that your change of course has been successful.
Swapping your Firm and Insurance choices
If you want to change your firm and insurance choices on UCAS, you will need to contact UCAS. We are unable to make this change for you.
Changes to how your course will be taught
We have published detailed guidance on how your course will be taught this academic year.
Studying safely on campus this September
We are closely following government advice as the Covid19 lockdown measures are gradually eased. We understand that you need as much clarity as possible about what this might mean for you as an applicant or offer holder at York St John University.
Firstly, your offer will remain in place whatever happens and we very much hope that you will choose to join us in September.
We are making plans for learning, teaching and social activity to take place on our campuses when we start the academic year.
Just like everywhere else in the world, life at University is going to feel different for a while. We expect physical distancing measures to be in place across the UK for several months and are looking at options to minimise risk in our buildings and teaching spaces.
For this reason, our teaching provision will be adapted to deliver a blend of on-campus learning, personal tuition and online lectures to keep you safe when you join our York St John University community.
This means large group lectures will be replaced with online alternatives, and smaller practicals, seminars, tutorials and personal tuition sessions will be delivered in line with physical distancing guidelines on campus.
As well as support from our academic staff, you will have access to a wide range of student support when you start with us, which will be available in person or online.
We are working with our Students’ Union and current students to explore a range of social, sport and leisure opportunities for you to meet new people and get involved in university life.
We are reviewing all our accommodation sites and intend to mirror national guidance for households. All new first year students will be guaranteed a place in our accommodation if you apply before 12 July. We will also have a package of support for students who choose to stay at home and commute to campus.
As the city of York emerges from lockdown, it remains a great place to live and study. Our city centre location is close to the great sights and activities of York, and supermarkets and amenities are nearby, so there is no need to use public transport when you arrive. Local organisations and businesses are taking creative and innovative steps to enable residents to get the most out of living in our beautiful city.
We will continue to work tirelessly to make sure we can provide you with a valuable learning experience that prioritises your personal safety alongside our usual standards of teaching and university life. We will share more information with you in the weeks to come and in the meantime, if you have any further queries, please get in touch.
