Tackling the environmental emergency
"I want my students to be able to think on their own, but also to see things from diverse perspectives. Not only from a western perspective but also from a developing country perspective. Look at the technology, look at the economics, the social as well as the political impact. I want them to have all these perspectives in case they find themselves in a position to influence change in the future.
Growing up in a developing country, I could see the impact of environmental issues first hand. The impact on households, on livelihoods, even on societal structures in terms of conflict with farmers. So it was that personal observation that made me think environmental issues were where I wanted to make my future. My research into environmental management and flood risk recovery has taken me to Mozambique, Kenya and Bangladesh."
