Supporting dementia sufferers
"Working with YSJ Active has been great for me. I’d become interested in supporting people with dementia after doing a placement with Age UK. I spoke to the YSJ Active Manager and began to get involved, it was good to put my people skills to a different kind of use.
We run a weekly circuits group for the over 60’s at our main sports campus on Haxby Road. The participants have difficulty with perception and we have to work hard to keep them involved. It gives them and me and sense of meaning and purpose. Dementia can take so much away from you so it’s good to be doing something that gives sufferers confidence and helps them make new connections too. It also gives their carers a valuable break.
Before coming to York St John I had been working in finance, but I was ready for a change. Having benefitted from the support of Occupational Therapy myself I began looking into Occupational Therapy courses. I chose to study here because I liked the smaller, community environment and family feel. I appreciated the inclusive approach to fitness. I study part-time because that’s what works for me.
Working with dementia sufferers has motivated my own research. They often get marginalized or have assumptions made about them, we’re challenging that and giving people more choice about their own lives."
