Come and join us for a fun, Latin dance move inspired class that will give you a great aerobic workout and hopefully a laugh or two. You don't need to be a dancer and we aim to provide a relaxed, friendly environment. After one or two sessions you should start to feel confident with the routines and steps. At the end of the day, the important thing is to keep moving and enjoy yourself.

Please pay and sign in at Foss Reception before the start of every class.

York St John University Yoga with Vikki - what to expect:

The aim of yoga was, and still is, to improve mental and physical health. A regular yoga practice can help us to unwind and de-stress, it can teach us to release tension and find ways to improve the strength of weak muscles and stretch tight muscles. By building a positive relationship with ourselves, yoga can also enable us to look to all aspects of life and bring positivity there. There is also much research to show that yoga can also help improve blood pressure, enhance sleep and support pain relief.

It’s vital to listen to your body. Learning to recognise what your body is signalling to you to enable you to be present in your yoga practice. The term ‘present’ in a yoga context means to be aware of yourself in that moment. Stay focused on being steady, with the breath and movement, and feeling comfortable. That’s not to say it should feel easy, allow yourself some level of challenge be that physical or mental, but don’t become fixated with where you think you ‘should’ be. Be patient, allow the discovery and exploration to happen naturally and enjoy the process.

While yoga is rooted in traditional cultures of the east, it isn’t necessarily a religious practice, although for some people it holds a significant spiritual importance. The classes at York St John University are holistic and aim to support people to become more body aware and enjoy exploring a range of movement. The closing word of ‘namaste’ is a respectful greeting in Sanskrit. It’s used to conclude yoga classes as an acknowledgment to ourselves and our fellow yogis for a job well done!

Things to remember:

  • You are not in competition with anyone else (including yourself!) when you practice yoga
  • Aim to arrive hydrated and healthy to a class, and it’s advisable to leave a big meal until after your class. Yoga is best practiced on an empty stomach
  • Layers are key so wrap up and take them off as necessary.  It’s easier to get cooler than it is to get warmer in our final relaxation and your body temperature can drop quickly in this part of the class
  • Take your socks off (if you feel comfortable to do so)! Practicing yoga in bare feet is the best way to feel connected to the earth
  • Let go and enjoy it! Allow yourself to be open minded and receptive to what’s happening
