Professional activities

I am a member of British Association for Applied Linguistics (BAAL) and a board member of The Korea Contents Association (KoCon). I am a proposer of a BAAL Asian Language Education in Global Contexts SIG with other interested members. For peer-review activities, I served as an ad-hoc reviewer for Journal of Second Language Writing, The Journal of the Korea Contents Association, Innovation in Language Learning and Teaching, Journal of Multilingualism and Multilingual Development, and Transcultural Psychiatry. Also, I have reviewed book proposals and manuscripts for Routledge, Wiley-Blackwell, Cambridge University Press, and Science Books.

In South Korea, I served as an editorial board member for the government-authorised English textbooks for secondary school (2012 to 2014).

For Impact activities, I am actively involved in English teacher societies in South Korea, invited as a plenary speaker and seminar leader. In the UK, I have hosted externally-funded public engagement events for knowledge exchange of Korean language and cultural artefacts.

Research Interests

I consider myself as an applied linguist, as most of my research activities fall in second language learning and use. My PhD dissertation was motivation and its influence on language use in the case of Vietnamese learners of Korean language. Afterwards, I continued working on the topics of motivation, foreign language enjoyment, mobile communication, multimodal language use, study abroad, intercultural communication, etc. Currently, I am working on the two externally-funded projects as a Co-I:

  • Mobile-assisted language learning among Korean language learners (funder: Academy of Korean studies, USD 20,000)
  • Mental health suffering due to English fever in South Korea (funder: Academy of Medical Sciences, GBP 22,600)
