This course will enable you to feel confident having conversations in BSL. Expand your conversational skills with vocabulary linked to work, shopping, transport and more. Further develop the skills you learnt on your introduction to BSL course and continue your professional development.

Course information
Who is this course for?
This course is open to anyone who has completed a level 1 or 2 British Sign Language course, or the Introduction to BSL course at York St John University.
What will I learn?
You will develop your knowledge with vocabulary linked to a range of topics, including:
- Work
- Shopping
- Transport
How will I learn?
This course is taught in person at our York campus and is very practical. You will work in groups and pairs so that you can put your language skills into practice. You will be assessed by a conversation in BSL with a lecturer.
Assessment criteria
A 2 minute conversation in BSL with a lecturer.

Course leader biographies
Amanda Smith, Associate Professor
Amanda Smith is an Associate Professor with over 20 years of experience teaching various levels of BSL and deaf awareness. She has attained the highest level of BSL qualification and is registered to deliver and assess Signature qualifications. Amanda is profoundly deaf and a proud member of the deaf community, using BSL as her preferred language.
