Meiji University was founded in January 1881 as the Meiji Law School by a group of young lawyers barely in their 30s: Tatsuo Kishimoto, Kozo Miyagi, and Misao Yashiro.
It was an era characterized by Japan's urgent need to develop as a modern independent nation. The three founded the Meiji Law School in their fervent hope to "foster bright capable youths who would lead a modern civil society in Japan".
Meiji University ranks solidly among the best universities in Japan, currently consisting of 10 undergraduate schools, 12 graduate schools and 4 professional graduate schools.
In addition to the Surugadai Campus, Meiji University also comprises the Izumi Campus, Ikuta Campus, and the Nakano Campus opened in April 2013.
Based on the principle of 'Empowering the Individual', Meiji University aims to constantly lead the world by tackling new challenges and moving toward a new era.

Choosing your modules
You need to gain the following credits from your modules:
- 12 to 16 Japanese credits per semester
- 24 to 32 Japanese credits per year

The term is split into 2 semesters:
- Semester 1: Early September until early February (approximate dates)
- Semester 2: Late March until early August (approximate dates)

Accommodation
Accommodation abroad
Meiji University arranges 5 dormitories for incoming exchange students. One of them is for female students only, and the others are for both female students and male students. Meiji University makes all decisions regarding dormitory and room assignments.
Room fees vary from 48,000 Yen to 75,000 Yen per month.

Additional costs
This information is about additional costs of studying at this host university. Please be aware that prices are subject to change, and the list may not be exhaustive.
We recommend looking at the host website, as well as entry requirements for the country, to get a full understanding of the costs involved.
Students are required to pay into:
- Japanese National Insurance - approximately 20,000 JPY per year
- Gakkensai (personal accident insurance) - approximately 1,000 JPY per year
- Futai-Gakuso (comprehensive insurance) - approximately 1,860 JPY per year
Students who stay in Meiji accommodation will be required to pay the whole rent for their first semester, 5 months prior to arrival. Students who are staying for a year are required to pay for the second semester after arrival, prior to the start of the second semester. This is non refundable.
Visas
Please make sure you have an up to date passport that expires no earlier than 6 months after you intend to return.
You will be provided with guidance and documentation from the partner university but it will be your responsibility to obtain the correct visa. Neither the Study Abroad team here or at the partner university are qualified to offer consultations or detailed advice regarding visa applications. Immigration laws are complex and subject to frequent changes.
