Clearing

How Clearing works

Our step by step guide to Clearing.

A staff and student discussing careers and funding.

Clearing lets you search for and apply to universities that still have places available.

Clearing is a great opportunity to find the right university. This could be because your results are not what you expected or you decide to apply after the UCAS and UCAS Extra deadlines.

You can apply through Clearing for any of the following reasons:

  • You are applying after the end of June
  • You have not received any offers
  • You have declined all your offers
  • You did not meet the conditions of your offers
  • You have an offer but want to change course or university

Use the video guides and steps below to find out how to apply to study with us once you have your results.

A step by step guide to applying through Clearing

List item One

Find the course for you

Search our list of courses available in Clearing. We publish this list in July.

Found the course for you? Read about the course, what you will study and make a note of the course UCAS code.

List item Two

Talk it through with us

Call us on 01904 876 598 to discuss the course and its entry requirements.

Have your results and the course UCAS code to hand. You will also need your UCAS personal ID if you have one.

International students: We accept a range of international qualifications. To check equivalent qualifications that meet our entry requirements, visit our international applications page.

List item Three

Receive your offer

If we can accept you through Clearing we will make you a verbal offer when you get in touch. This will be followed up by an email with your offer in writing.

If we have places available on our Occupational Therapy, Physiotherapy, Nursing, or Primary Teaching courses and you want to apply, you will need to have an interview before we can make you an offer.

During Clearing you might receive a few offers from different universities before choosing which one to accept.

List item Four

Make it official

Add your course in UCAS as your Clearing choice. By doing this, you are confirming that you accept our offer.

Once you have done this, we will confirm your place through UCAS.

International students: Check if you need a visa to study in the UK. If you do, you will need to apply through our standard route rather than Clearing. Please contact york.intl@yorksj.ac.uk for further information.

List item Five

Get ready to start

When your offer is accepted, it's time to apply for your accommodation and think about student finance. We will give you a helpline number to call after you have been made an offer so you can speak to a dedicated support team.

You can get to know York St John University before you start by booking a campus tour. Tours take place throughout the week, including weekends, and last up to 1 hour.

International students: If you need a visa to study in the UK, you need to apply for it. You can visit the UK government website for visa and immigration advice.

My Clearing experience was exceptional! As a primary education student I was anxious I wouldn't get a place on the course, however, I spoke to the head of the education department and she dealt with my situation. York St John was the right choice for me and thanks to Clearing I was able to enrol.
