"My lecturer arranged for a client to meet each group in the course individually. This allowed us to build a relationship with the client and apply our project to the real world. They also arranged for a financial adviser to watch our presentations and deliver honest feedback. This is a fantastic experience when pursuing a career in the public sector."

"My placement year massively helped me prepare for the working world and understand what to expect when starting my career properly. I learnt basically everything there is to know about accounting: how to balance my time, how to prioritise things such as exam preparation, a lot about the world of business. We did a lot of case study sessions which really helped me understand things in perspective."

Responsibility and community

Through your time with us, you will learn how to innovate in ethical and sustainable business practices. We want to change the world for the better and when you study with us you will be integral to that.

York Business School has forged deep and meaningful links with local institutions, building professional relationships built on trust, integrity, and a determination to support York in developing as a leading city for ethical and sustainable business.

York Business School purposefully interacts with managers of business corporations to enhance our students' learning, sharing their challenges in meeting social and environmental responsibilities. Our aim is to facilitate students and businesses to collaborate in building solutions that meet these challenges. To do this, York Business School has built a wealth of partnerships both with external business organisations, both in the city of York and globally.

Founded on the core beliefs of responsibility, sustainability and opportunity, York Business School has been a signatory of the United National Principles of Responsible Management Education (PRME) since November 2014. We are committed to advancing the PRME in our teaching, partnerships and research, making considerable progress over the course of the last 8 years. The PRME internship has allowed our students to explore and understand how to become innovators in ethical and sustainable business practices. Over the paid 12 week internship the students undertake a communication and pilot research project under the supervision of the PRME research team through the production of 2 surveys.

"The internship is teaching me valuable skills for my dissertation next year and beyond. I am currently in the process of promoting a call out to students to participate in focus groups. We want to promote and gain feedback from students on how they would like to see sustainability challenges reflected in their courses. I am learning how to conduct effective interviews, how to transcribe information, and analyse data, while also contributing towards making York St John more sustainable.

My work continues outside of the University by promoting the good work we do with a global community of PRME students and local business partners. The PRME Student Internship focuses on building links both locally and globally with PRME students to share in a voice concerning critical global challenges and how Business Schools can collectively work to build future leaders to tackle major issues such as the climate crisis."
