Maximum innovation with minimum environmental impact for York St John University London expansion.

York St John University is proud to announce the official opening of the new floor at our thriving London Campus. The expansion doubles the existing floorspace and introduces state-of-the-art facilities to foster a creative and collaborative learning environment. The work has also been recognised for its industry leading sustainable fit out.

Occupying a prestigious location in the Export Building in London, the newly opened 3rd floor is designed as a hub of innovation and inspiration. Key features include dedicated teaching spaces, high-tech computer facilities, and a London library in addition to the full digital access to the York library that students already enjoy. There is also a vibrant new student kitchen and social space to further enhance the sense of community on campus.

The 3rd floor is also home to a series of innovative hubs to enhance learning and entrepreneurship:

  • MakerVerse, where students can develop practical skills and hands-on experience using new technology and tools to bring ideas to life. With access to 3D printers, podcasting and content creation facilities, this unique environment aims to foster creativity, innovation and collaboration.
  • The Dock, a dedicated start-up co-working space, designed for productivity, collaboration, and social progress. The Dock provides a host of resources, meeting rooms and events to build the skills and networks needed to develop businesses.
  • The Enterprise Academy (formerly the Venture Creation Lab), a start-up and leadership accelerator programme, developed and delivered by entrepreneurs and industry professionals.

The campus expansion is testament to the University’s commitment to providing teaching space that is innovative and enriching as well as sustainable. Environmentally sound development principles, including resource conservation, pollution minimisation, and the health and wellbeing of its occupants, were at the forefront of the design and fit-out process.

As a result, York St John has become one of only a handful of companies to achieve the highest official accolade for a sustainable fit-out. The Ska Gold certification recognises the University’s work to go above and beyond industry standard and reduce the environmental footprint of the building.

Louise Donaghy, Dean of the YSJ London Campus said: “I’m delighted to see the new space in use and being enjoyed by our students. It’s a great social centre, helping students to foster connections and really get the most out of their time with us.

“The 3rd floor has already played host to numerous events, including a Careers Week for students, the first YSJ Virtual and Augmented Reality Conference, and a dedicated celebration event for London graduates. We’re looking forward to many more!”

Nick Coakely, Director of Estates Management at York St John University said: “We’re very proud to be awarded Ska Gold for our work on the fantastic new learning environment in the Export Building.

“By prioritising sustainability in this way and being officially recognised for doing so, the YSJ London Campus is a great example of how universities can lead the way in creating environmentally responsible and inspiring spaces for learning and collaboration.”
