British Sign Language student practising signing in class

Studying British Sign Language (BSL) will give you insights into the language and community of deaf people not only in the UK but around the world.

A degree in BSL can prepare you for a career working with deaf communities. It could also be the first step towards a role in social research, speech and language therapy, teaching and translating.

Specialist resources

The Linguistics Lab is a space reserved for Language and Linguistics students. Our lab includes 30 PCs with all the software you will need for your degree. You might use this software to analyse videos of British Sign Language, design language experiments or analyse data you have collected for your own research project.

The Languages workshop gives you a place to use our online resources and borrow books or films in your language of study. You can meet your classmates here to practise your language skills or make short BSL videos for your Signature exams.

Community work

On this course you can get involved with projects that make a difference in the community and give you valuable teaching experience. Our new Communities Centre will bring more opportunities to put your skills and knowledge into practice while giving back to the local community.

Societies and activities

There are multiple societies aimed at helping you practise your language skills, meet like-minded students, and hear from our inspirational alumni. Current societies include British Sign Language Society and Linguistics Society.

The British Sign Language Society organises regular social events, as well as offering regular informal opportunities to practice BSL with your peers, and meet students from other year groups. Our Linguistics Society works alongside staff to organise a series of academic and professional based talks which run every fortnight.
