Information on paying for your University accommodation, including payment schedules, deposits, and financial support.

Accommodation deposits
When you apply for a place in York St John University accommodation and receive your room offer, you will be asked to pay a £200 advance rent payment when you accept, to secure the offer. This advance rent payment will later be deducted from your first rent payment.
Your offer letter will tell you the deadline for this payment, and you will also receive a reminder email 24 hours before the deadline. If you miss your deposit and acceptance deadline, your room offer will be cancelled. If you still want to stay in University accommodation, please contact the Accommodation team. Your application can be reactivated, but you will be added back to the list of students still to be allocated, and we will not be able to guarantee you accommodation at this stage.
If you have paid your deposit but do not move into your accommodation for any reason, you will receive a refund for your deposit.
If you are not able to pay the £200 deposit, please email us. We may be able to refer you to our Funding Advice team, and provided that you engage with them, the deposit can be added to your first rent instalment.
Rent payments
Depending on the type of room you are offered, your accommodation costs will range from around £105 to £180 per week. Your contract length will usually range from 37 weeks to 45 weeks.
Details of your accommodation price and contract length will be included in your offer letter.
The standard payment process for York St John accommodation is 3 equal instalments over the course of the academic year. These instalments are usually paid at the beginning of each term, for example:
- Instalment 1: mid October
- Instalment 2: mid January
- Instalment 3: mid April
On some occasions, we can arrange alternative payment plans such as monthly instalments. To discuss options for alternative payment schedules, please email creditcontrol@yorksj.ac.uk.
Financial support
Everyone's financial situation is different, and we know that some students will need support with their finances during university.
Our Student Funding Advice team provides a range of independent and confidential advice and guidance. They can help you understand any financial support you may be eligible for. You can attend drop-in sessions with the team either online or on campus.
Depending on circumstances, there may be an option for reduced accommodation rates for some students who receive Disabled Students Allowance, however no other subsidised rates are available for our accommodation. If you find that you are unable to afford the place you have been offered in accommodation, please contact the Accommodation team to discuss your options.
