Animation BA (Hons)

Animation combines the use of technology with the craft of art and illustration to tell engaging stories. You will gain the knowledge and practical animation skills to identify and solve design communication problems...

You get so much creative freedom when studying Animation at York St John. You can try out all sorts of animation mediums all throughout first year and that was a fun learning experience for me, whether it is traditional hand drawn animation on paper, painting cels, 2D hand-drawn, 2D rigged, 3D or even stop motion. There is so much to experiment with. Another great aspect of the course is the animation lecturers. I have never met such kind and encouraging lecturers in my life.

Our lecturer has been an endless pool of support for us, and has encouraged us to try out whatever styles and techniques we wanted to. This could be cell painting to hand drawn techniques, there is always something new and exciting to try. Our lecturer always has time for every student, and ensures everyone is happy and enjoying their work! There has been a stream of opportunities like the Aesthetica film festival, where we can meet people from around the UK. We are in contact with other artists and animators, which means we are now working with an industry ready portfolio which will give us the best chance when going into the world of work!

Connect with industry

Throughout your course we will invite industry experts to visit and share their experiences in guest speaker sessions and masterclasses. This will allow you to hear from them about their experiences and career, ask questions that you may have and for you to network with industry connections.

Study spaces

We like to replicate real world animation studios as much as we can in our spaces, with access to industry standard software such as Toon Boom Harmony and Dragonframe. You can also explore traditional animation techniques in our studios on our animation light desks. We keep all of the animation techniques in one space to create a diverse and exciting environment that you can really take ownership of. Join a community of animators and work in your own dedicated animation space equipped with tools and resources reflective of professional practice.

Degree Show

In your final year you will exhibit your work at our annual Degree Show (SOTA) Festival. This show highlights the exceptional creativity across various disciplines in the School of the Arts and celebrates your innovative work. It is an chance to see the work of the next generation of talented individuals. It exposes new ways of thinking and creating. It offers a chance to discover work that will challenge perceptions and influence future changes in the world. This is a fantastic opportunity to showcase your work to regional industry partners and businesses, and celebrate your achievements with friends and family.
