Course overview
Advance your legal knowledge in the areas that interest you and help you achieve your professional goals by choosing from a range of optional modules. This includes modules in company law, intellectual property and sports law and governance. Alongside these you will complete a Capstone Project where you will be paired with an industry partner who will set you a real legal problem to investigate and find a resolution for.
You will learn how to research widely and apply knowledge of legal, ethical and/or commercial principles to complex legal issues systematically and creatively.
Exercise sound judgment, make appropriate decisions and draw reasoned conclusions in complex real legal contexts and in the absence of complete data.

If you choose to study full time the course will take 1 year to complete. You will study:
- 2 Optional modules in semester 1
- 2 Optional modules in semester 2
- 1 Capstone Project throughout the year

Learn how to identify and apply principles of Company law, critically analyse core concepts and evaluate them in the context of contemporary developments in the corporate environment.

Consumer protection law is a crucial area of study that intersects with various aspects of private and public law. Examine the legal framework designed to protect consumers in their interactions with businesses. Gain an understanding of consumer rights and business obligations. You will engage with current consumer protection issues, from traditional sales to e-commerce.

Gain an understanding of the legal and ethical principles that underpin all aspects of society, with a particular focus on the professional environment. Study the major ethical frameworks required to understand and reflect on the relationship of ethics and law. Examine the interactions between ethical issues and positive law. You will be encouraged to reflect critically on ethical arguments with reference to challenging ethical-legal issues.

Optional module
Examine the legal issues surrounding the governance of sport, with a focus on English law. You will explore the complex interplay between various legal disciplines as they apply in a sporting context. Engage with current issues in sports law using theoretical study and practical application to scenarios, including:
- Anti doping regulations
- Intellectual property rights
- E-sports law
Gain a critical understanding of the unique challenges in sports governance, from the structure of sporting bodies to the resolution of sports-specific disputes.

Optional module
Develop an understanding of corporate governance issues. Explore the need for efficient governance of corporations taking account of the interests of shareholder and stakeholder groups. You will build on your knowledge about the internal governance of a company, including corporate governance theories, law, and practice. Then, to apply this theory knowledge to real industry scenarios, you will analyse case studies of corporate failures to identify gaps and make recommendations.

Gain an understanding of the intellectual property system facilitating critical evaluation of current issues in this dynamic area of law. The module will have a particular emphasis on:
- The laws of copyright
- Patents
- Passing off
- Trademarks and breach of confidence

Environmental law is a rapidly evolving and increasingly important area of legal practice. This module focuses on the legal frameworks governing environmental protection and sustainable development. Develop a critical understanding of how law interacts with environmental issues at national and international levels. This will enable you to engage with current environmental challenges from a legal perspective.

Optional module
Build on your knowledge of Constitutional Law, Criminal Law and Human Rights by applying and interrogating these fundamental principles in the context of terrorism and the perceived terrorist threats to modern society. Consider the legal responses to terrorism both nationally and internationally. Identify the ethical and moral problems raised by counter-terrorism law and measures in a democratic state. Reflect upon issues that impinge on personal values and professional practice and consider suggestions for reform. By the end of the module, you will have greater confidence in debating the philosophical, social and culture problems that surround the law and terrorism, and identifying the limitations of the law.

Compulsory module
Throughout your time on the course, you will work on your Capstone Project. This pairs you with an industry partner who sets a real world legal problem for investigation and resolution. You will work from your industry partner's brief to develop an appropriate research design, apply relevant methodologies produce a solution that evidences both advanced legal knowledge and transferable professional skills. This assessment will assess your ability to think critically, develop reasoned arguments and write in a professional style conforming to appropriate academic conventions. It will also prepare you to enter the professional legal industry.
Teaching and assessment
Teaching and learning
You will typically be taught through a weekly 3 hr workshop per module. There will also be a general weekly 2hr surgery that offers extra support if you have come from a non-law background. Workshops incorporate interactive technologies such as Mentimeter, enabling anonymous contributions to whole group discussion and allowing tutors to assess understanding of key concepts in real time. Workshops, usually capped at 25 students, provide opportunities for collaborative groupwork, discussion, and applied activities.
Fortnightly you will also have 1-hour small group Problem Based Learning (PBL) tutorials. These sessions provide a work-related learning experience in which you research and analyse a real-world scenario set by an industry partner operating in international trade. The PBL format develops your problem solving, research, and negotiation skills. The work you produce contributes to an assessed element requiring you to present your findings and recommendations back to the industry partner.

Assessment
You will be assessed by a range of methods that aim to help youdevelop your knowledge and skills and reflect real industry scenarios. This can include:

In each module there will be 2 assessment workshops dedicated to helping you prepare and providing feedback to help you improve. You will be assigned a personal tutor who will support you towards your career goals.

Minimum entry requirements
2:1 honours degree in a related subject
If your degree is in an unrelated subject, but you can provide evidence of relevant professional experience, your application may still be considered.
International students
If you are an international student you will need to show that your qualifications match our entry requirements.

If English is not your first language you will need to show that you have English Language competence at IELTS level 6.0 (with no skill below 5.5) or equivalent.

Accreditation of Prior Experiential Learning (APEL)
If you do not have traditional qualifications, you might be able to provide evidence of professional experience in the subject as an alternative way to meet the entry requirements. This is called Accreditation of Prior Experiential Learning (APEL). Appropriate references and records of employment would need to be presented to support your case for admission.
