Counselling Children and Young People: A Taster Session
Explore the skills and knowledge required to start working therapeutically with children and young people.
This 2‑hour taster session offers a playful, hands‑on introduction to working therapeutically with children and young people. You will learn what professional counselling bodies expect, how counselling for children and young people works and how it differs from counselling adults. You’ll be invited to imagine working with clients aged 4 to 18 as you explore the creative approaches used for counselling children and young people. This taster session is an excellent foundation for our other counselling courses taught by John Bradley.

Who is this course for?
This course is suitable for any trainee or qualified counsellor interested in finding out more about counselling children and young people.
What will I learn?
We will explore the following topics:
- What is counselling children and young people?
- How is counselling this client group different to working with adult clients?
- What do the professional counselling bodies (such as BACP) expect of counselling children and young people counsellors?
- Legal and ethical issues that apply to working with this client group
- How creative ways of working may support using talking therapy skills, whatever your modality

Course leader biographies
John Bradley is a person-centred counsellor, supervisor and trainer. He is a BACP Senior Accredited Counsellor / Psychotherapist (Children and Young People) and BACP Senior Accredited Supervisor.
John has been offering counselling to children and young people since 1998, previously working for Youth Counselling Projects for Hull City Council and East Riding of Yorkshire Council. He has also been offering supervision since 2008, and counselling children and young people training (courses and workshops) since 2013.
John currently works in private practice as a counsellor, supervisor and trainer in Hull. He also offers counselling in a secondary school.
