I love how small the classes are, you get to know everyone including the academics really well. I also love how hands on everything is, they always like to follow a general teaching or lecture with something practical which helps me apply what we have learnt straight away.

Everyone will tell you that being on placement is the biggest highlight of the course. What you learn prior to placement in classes is so valuable and enjoyable, but it’s even better when you get to put it into practice. There are a lot of unique things about the course, such as open badges and learning about occupational therapy engagement with the military. This will become one of the biggest role emerging areas of the field and I feel privileged to have had the chance to have a better understanding of it. Everything we learn in class is put into practice in the same week and then again later on placement. We learn about real life situations so we know how best to prepare ourselves to help people.

One of the best things about the course is how varied and interactive the teaching is. I really enjoy how practical my lessons are. As well as having lectures and seminars, we also have workshops where we develop practical skills, talks from service user’s and clinicians, visits to local services, group work and projects, and of course placements. I really like how well supported I’ve felt on the course. My classes are small and friendly, and my lecturers are enthusiastic and engaging. A moment that stands out for me is being on placement. Placements give you the opportunity to experience different areas of occupational therapy practice. They not only help you to apply theory to real life, but they also allow you to explore different occupation therapy roles you could consider in the future. It’s really rewarding when you’re able to apply what you have learnt in class on placement and see the positive impact it has for the service user.
