Our full Support for Learning in Practice (SLiP) course and refresher course prepares healthcare professionals to support placement students.

Update your knowledge and skills to support students with their practice education placements through these online CPD courses. The aim of both courses is to enable you to provide an effective practice education placement learning experience.

Course information

Who is this course for?

The course is open to:

  • Physiotherapists
  • Occupational therapists

The full SLiP course is for those who are new to practice education and who have not previously completed a SLiP course.

The SLiP refresher is for those who have already attended a SLiP course and are building on their existing knowledge and skills of practice education.

What will I learn?

On this course you will explore the role of practice education. You will:

  • Learn to create an effective learning environment with reference to learning and teaching theories
  • Develop existing interpersonal skills in relation to supervision and coaching
  • Identify individual learning needs and set learning objectives
  • Reflect on the boundaries of professional roles in supporting learning, teaching and assessment
  • Explore strategies to address challenging scenarios
  • Examine the role of assessment and feedback


How will I learn?

Typical attendance is every 2 to 3 years, dependent on your organisational policy.

We will deliver all the courses online using Microsoft Teams. You will need to download the Teams App in advance of your training, and you will receive a web link to instructions as part of your booking confirmation.

You will register on YSJ Learn to access course resources and will receive a CPD certificate of attendance once you have completed the course. The link to this will be sent with your booking confirmation, along with sign in details.


How will my employer benefit?

Through this course you will be able to provide effective support to students during their practice placements.


Course leader biographies

Fiona Howlett

Fiona graduated as an Occupational Therapist in 1991. From 1991 to 2005 Fiona worked as an Occupational Therapist in the Yorkshire region and was employed in a range of clinical areas. She was Head Occupational Therapist/Clinical specialist in: Community and Forensic learning disabilities, Intermediate care/community rehab and an Occupational Therapist in Social Services, stroke rehab and acute mental health day services. Fiona joined the academic teaching team in 2001 as a lecturer/practitioner and became a Senior Lecturer in 2005 and Head of Programme for the BHSc Hons In Service Occupational Therapy Programme in 2007. Fiona’s current role is Senior Lecturer.

Robert Avery

Robert entered the field of vision impairment in 1983. In 1990 he became one of the first specialist Rehabilitation Workers for people with a vision impairment trained in Scotland and spent a further six years in the field working directly with blind and partially sighted people. In 1996 he became a lecturer at a Rehabilitation Worker Training School in Glasgow. Robert has contributed to Occupational Therapy and Physiotherapy programmes since joining York St John as a Senior Lecturer. He is also involved in delivering training to existing professionals in the Health and Social Care sector.
