Writing News and Features

The Writing News and Features module is an introduction to news gathering, reporting, and news and feature writing. You will explore the principles of professional journalism, learning about the context and constraints that can affect a journalist's search for original, accurate, legally-sound and ethically sourced material. Some of the topics we will cover include:

  • What is news?
  • Sources of news
  • Different forms of journalistic writing
  • Ethics and media law
  • Developing contacts

Practical experience

There are opportunities to produce work for our news website The Yorkie, YouTube or social media platforms from the start of your degree.

Each year you will build on your live production skills through industry-standard news days and by filming in studios and on location. You will deliver this material to deadlines, so you are prepared for the pressures of working in the industry. Our industry connections can help you find valuable work placements in the city. Our students have worked with:

Awards and events

Each year we host a series of masterclasses on campus as part of the Aesthetica Short Film Festival. Our partnership with the annual BAFTA-qualifying festival gives you access to industry expert specialisms such as:

  • Documentary filmmaking
  • Journalism
  • Cinematography
  • Editing
  • Directing

We also host a student awards night at the end of the course. It is attended and judged by industry practitioners, giving you an extra opportunity to gain valuable contacts across the media industries.
