Scholarships for alumni

If you stay at York St John for your postgraduate studies, you will have access to our community of support. You will also be eligible for our scholarships for alumni.

These can range from a 10% to 25% discount in your fees.

Government funding

There are a range of loans and bursaries for postgraduate studies. Find out more about the funding you could get, including bursaries for specific courses.

Postgraduate Master's Loan

A Postgraduate Master's Loan can help towards the cost of tuition fees and living costs while you study a master's degree.

Depending on where in the UK you live, how you apply for a loan will vary. Find out if you are eligible and the amount you could borrow on the websites below.

PGCE and School Direct (non-salaried)

The UK government offers bursaries and scholarships to students who want to study on a postgraduate teacher training course in England that leads to a qualified teacher status (QTS). Bursaries and scholarships are not available for every subject and you can check whether your subject qualifies by checking the Get into teaching website.

The amount you can get will depend on the undergraduate degree you hold and the subject your PGCE focuses on.

You cannot receive both a bursary and a scholarship and if you are eligible, you do not need to pay it back.

Postgraduate Doctoral Loan

Some funding bodies also offer a Postgraduate Doctoral Loan to help towards the cost of tuition fees and living costs whilst you study your doctoral degree.

Depending on where in the UK you live, how you apply will vary. Find out if you are eligible and the amount you could borrow on the websites below:

Please note: the Student Awards Agency Scotland and Student Finance Northern Ireland do not currently offer funding for PhD courses.

Funding for international students

As an international student, there are a number of ways to fund your studies, including funding from your home country.

We also have a range of scholarships for fee paying international students.

The Alternative Guide to Postgraduate Funding

The Alternative Guide to Postgraduate Funding is a resource for current and prospective postgraduate students studying or applying at a UK university. Students of any nationality and chosen course can search for funding, including for PhD, Master's and PGCE courses.

The guide focuses on alternative funding from the voluntary sector, and contains links to many charities which provide grants to students.

Staff and students of York St John can use the guide for free. You can log in using the link below with your York St John email.

If you have applied to study with us, we can provide you with access PIN to the guide. Email us on fundingadvice@yorksj.ac.uk to get your access to the guide.
