Study abroad

As part of your degree you have the option to spend a semester abroad at one of our partner institutions in the United States. This life changing experience can improve your academic performance and increase your employability. It can also lead to greater self awareness and confidence, and provide a better understanding of personal and cultural values and biases.

There are no extra tuition fees for this amazing opportunity. You will receive a generous fee reduction on your annual York St John University fees and will not have to pay tuition fees to your host institution.

Building employable skills

You will study a module in your second year which focuses specifically on planning for your future career. You will either take part in a work experience placement for a minimum of 10 days or undertake a work related project. This may involve designing campaign materials, analysing a current City of York Council policy proposal, or contributing to the Students’ Union elections. As part of this module you will also hear from guest speakers who work in a role relevant to your degree, introducing you to potential career paths.

Authentic assessment

From writing party manifestos to ministerial briefing papers, we have designed assessments which reflect tasks you are likely to carry out in your career. We are preparing you for success in the workplace as well as in the classroom.
