Course overview
Our Healthcare Management MBA brings together contemporary academic theory and research with a practical understanding of activities within organisations. On this course you will develop key personal and professional skills in healthcare management. These will put you in a strong position to advance your career. You will explore issues that have a significant impact on organisations by working with others and building on the experience of those around you.
You will focus on the key skills, processes and practices of business, management and healthcare management. You will work with your fellow learners on solutions to real problems. This work will enhance your ability to maximise individual and organisational potential.
The major management project you undertake will involve solving a significant organisational issue. This could be a piece of work that is actionable in your current workplace or of importance to organisations generally.
Choosing to study this course with the placement year will give you the opportunity to gain relevant experience in the sector. There are 2 types of placement available, so you can choose the one that best aligns with your ambitions.
Course structure
How you will study
This course can only be studied full time. You can choose to study the course for 1 year without a placement, or for 2 years which includes a placement year.
You will study:
- 6 compulsory modules
- A compulsory Capstone Project or a Business Consultancy Project if you are on the placement route

Compulsory module
Develop a critical understanding of resource management and its effective deployment and allocation to achieve sustainable competitive advantage for organisations. The module will focus on 2 main resources: financial and human. You will be introduced to theoretical concepts underpinning resource development and deployment such as:
- Human capital development
- Change management
- Motivational theories
- Learning organisations
- Financial methods
- Short and long-term decision making
- Budgeting
This module will focus on the financial accounting skills that every executive needs to be able to communicate company results and make accounting choices. This includes interpreting management information, such as management accounts, ratio analysis and exploring differences in reporting practices.

Compulsory module
This module explores the principles, practices and nuanced complexities of strategic management in the healthcare sector. It is designed to help you develop a critical understanding of how strategic thinking and decision-making can be accurately applied to improve organisational performance, respond to policy and regulatory changes and ultimately deliver high-quality, sustainable healthcare services. You will draw on contemporary academic theory and practice in strategic management, leadership and healthcare systems to examine how healthcare organisations develop, implement and evaluate strategies. This module will be key in helping you to develop global perspectives of healthcare management, respond to emerging challenges and drive innovation within the healthcare sector.

Leadership, strategy and change are significant issues for organisations worldwide. In a rapidly evolving, uncertain, and complex global landscape, organisations need to consistently adapt to survive and succeed. Strategic leadership is crucial in steering this adaptation by harmonizing vision, strategy, and culture to foster sustainable change. In organisations of all kinds, managers need to be able to lead and manage change. Gain an understanding of strategic decision-making, managing change, and building resilient organisations.

Compulsory module
This module will introduce you to key international business theories and concepts. It considers the strategic role played by transnational corporations (TNCs) as the primary movers and shapers of the global economic system. You will gain an appreciation of the principal institutional and organisational macrostructures of the global economy, the role of the state, international organisations and regional trading blocs in shaping international business and consider the impact of diverse national business systems on firm strategy. Explore the application of management processes for developing and defining a new business concept, including market analysis and competitor performance analysis. You will learn about the purpose and procedures in the planning process and be able to plan and execute action steps critical in the implementation of a business plan.

Compulsory module
Undertake a research project about an issue that is relevant to your interests and career goals. Plan and undertake research, analyse data and develop solutions to reach evidence based conclusions. You will learn about key issues linked to research design and methodology and/or systematic review, to develop a research proposal. Develop key methodological and scientific skills as part of the research process, including areas such as debates in areas linked to quantitative and qualitative forms of investigation, experimentation, and generation and analysis of evidence.

Compulsory module
This is only available if you are studying full time with a placement year. You will work independently to produce a consultancy project with the support of an appropriate academic supervisor. This is an opportunity to practise your skills and apply your knowledge in the workplace to enhance your future employability. You will engage with issues such as career decision making, the recruitment cycle, applying for jobs and finally sourcing and embarking on a placement or a group or individual project.
The MBA with Professional Experience
If you choose the MBA with Professional Experience, you will be expected to engage in experiential activity lasting the equivalent of an academic year.
There are currently 2 options available:
Work placement
The placement is designed to address the demands of the business management profession and give you a competitive edge when it comes to your career. The work placement will provide opportunities to apply knowledge and skills learnt in the taught modules, enhance communication and interpersonal skills and improve employment potential. The placement component is for an academic year in duration, which starts after you have successfully completed the taught modules. During your placement, you will also work towards and complete your Business Consultancy Project.
It is ultimately your responsibility to secure your placement. The University will offer guidance and support, and may recommend you to our partners that have expressed strong support and interest in the course.
Enterprise Academy
The Enterprise Academy utilises the University’s expertise to facilitate the development of entrepreneurial skills and knowledge to foster the development of a new commercial opportunity.
The Enterprise Academy provides you with the opportunity to implement and utilise the information attained through taught modules in a practical environment, enhance communication skills and improve employment potential. You will be located in the Academy for a maximum of 1 academic year, which will commence after successful completion of the taught modules. You will also base the Business Consultancy Project on the commercial opportunity developed in the Lab.
If you will be an international student on a Tier 4 visa will have a valid CAS for the course duration of 2 years, subject to your meeting the UKVI’s standard requirements.
During the Professional Experience period, you will complete the Business Consultancy Project which awards 60 credits of your qualification. The Professional Experience is only available to those students studying towards the award on a full-time basis.

The emphasis is always on collaborative learning. We encourage you to share expertise and insights, allowing you all to learn from each other as well as your lecturers. Each module has a Virtual Learning Environment (VLE) where you and other students will be encouraged to participate in online debate and collaborative approaches to learning.
If you have not engaged in formal education for some time and never studied at postgraduate level, there will be support available throughout your studies. This includes support with study skills and conventions of academic analysis and writing.

Assessment
Your assessments are designed to mirror real organisational activities. The types of assessment will be varied and may include:

You will receive detailed feedback on assessments in relation to development, further areas for research and guidance on how to enhance your subject knowledge. This will help you to improve your work, further develop your skills and advance your employability.
Placements
This course comes with the option of a full year in industry placement.

If your degree is in an unrelated subject, but you can provide evidence of relevant professional experience, your application may still be considered.
International students

If English is not your first language you will need to show that you have English Language competence at IELTS level 6.0 (with no skill below 5.5) or equivalent.
Accreditation of Prior Experiential Learning (APEL)
If you do not have traditional qualifications, you might be able to provide evidence of professional experience in the subject as an alternative way to meet the entry requirements. This is called Accreditation of Prior Experiential Learning (APEL). Appropriate references and records of employment would need to be presented to support your case for admission.

UK
The tuition fee for this postgraduate course in the 2026 - 2027 academic year is:
- £11,000 for 1 year of full time study
- £12,700 for the 2 year course with a placement year
These costs apply to all UK, Jersey, Guernsey and Isle of Man students.
