I am a poet and novelist. I teach across the undergraduate and postgraduate Creative Writing programmes and supervise postgraduate projects in both poetry and prose.

My most recent book is the novel Mr Outside. My previous novel is Fatherhood, which won a Northern Fiction Award and was longlisted for the Republic of Consciousness Prize. My first poetry collection was Bottled Air, won the Melita Hume Prize and an Eric Gregory Award from the Society of Authors. My second collection is Away From Me. I write regular reviews in publications including The Guardian, e-flux, and The Poetry Review.

I run the York Centre for Writing Poetry Series, a regular event series that hosts UK and international writers on campus.

I am particularly keen to hear from postgraduate students who are interested in writing between forms; parenthood; ecology and literature; fiction and cognitive change; new approaches to globalisation; representations of complexity and scale.

I direct the modules:

  • Writing Poetry
  • Contemporary Writing 1
  • Contemporary Writing 2
  • BA Dissertation Project
  • The Writing Life (MA)
  • Writing and the Environment (MA)

Areas of interest: writing between forms; parenthood; ecology and literature; fiction and cognitive change; new approaches to globalisation; representations of complexity and scale.

I have spoken at festivals and conferences including the BBC Proms, York Literature Festival, Maastricht International Poetry Nights, Aldeburgh International Festival, Ledbury Poetry Festival, the Maudsley Lectures on Poetry an Psychoanalysis.
