Who is this course for?
This workshop will be of interest to qualified supervisors as well as trainee supervisors. It may also be of interest to counsellors wanting to learn more about supervision with children and young people.
What will I learn?
You will learn how to support counsellors working with children and young people, including:
Building counselling relationships with this client group, adapting to the developmental age of the clients
Using creative ways of working in supervision
- Dealing with risk assessments
- Dealing with legal issues, such as age of consent, and child protection and safeguarding policies and procedures
- Supporting counsellors dealing child protection and safeguarding concerns
- Dealing with ethical dilemmas when working with children and young people
- Working as part of a multi-agency support team in a school setting
- Offering support to counsellors working in private practice with children and young people
- Acknowledging the place of self awareness when working with this children and young people
We will also look at what the BACP’s Competences for work with children and young people (4–18 years) say about supervision.
How will I learn?
You will learn through a combination of theory work and practical activities, including:
- Supervision case studies of current or past children and young people that practitioners have worked with.
- Experiential learning that involves reflecting on your work with children and young people.
- Group discussions where you will be able to share your thoughts in a non-judgmental space.
- Skills practice in pairs or small groups.
Course leader biographies
John Bradley
John is a person-centred counsellor, supervisor and trainer. He is a British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy (BACP) Senior Accredited Counsellor / Psychotherapist (Children and Young People) and BACP Senior Accredited Supervisor. John has offered counselling to children and young people since 1998, previously working for Youth Counselling Projects for Hull City Council and East Riding of Yorkshire Council. He has also offered supervision since 2008, and counselling children and young people training courses and workshops since 2013. John currently works in a private practice as a counsellor, supervisor and trainer in Hull. He also offers counselling in a secondary school.
