Alumni-funded scholarship applications
Starting your application
Before starting your application, it is important to make sure you are eligible for the scholarship. In order to be eligible, you must be a current undergraduate student studying a York St John University programme, and meet one or more of the scholarship criteria:
- Students who are carers
- Students who have 1 or more children
- Students who are estranged from their families and under 25
- Students whose family circumstances have altered drastically since filling out their loan application (for example bereavement, chronic illness, or divorce)
- Students with residual household income under £26,000.
Once you have completed the initial online application form, you will then be required to submit both a supporting statement and a written reference to complete your application. Both must be submitted by email to email@example.com before the application deadline.
Any applications that are missing either a statement or reference once the deadline has passed will not be put forward for consideration.
Completing your supporting statement
Your statement should be approximately 500 words and elaborate on how you meet the scholarship criteria. Your statement should generally be broken down as follows:
- Details of your current circumstances relevant to the scholarship criteria, and what impact this has on your studies (300-350 words)
- How the scholarship funds would benefit you if awarded (150-200 words).
Obtaining a written reference
You should already have an independent referee in place before you start your application, as you will need to submit their name and contact details in the online form.
Your referee cannot be a friend, family member or partner, and should instead be a current or former tutor, employer, community/religious leader, healthcare professional, sports coach or similar.
Your referee should have good knowledge of your personal circumstances and be able to explain how this is likely to impact on your studies.
As a rule, you should ask your referee to include the following in their written reference:
- How their relationship with you makes them a suitable independent referee
- Their knowledge and understanding of your circumstances, and the impact this has on your studies
- How they believe the scholarship would benefit you if awarded.
It is the responsibility of each applicant to contact their referee to ensure a reference is submitted. The scholarships team will not contact referees to chase up missing references.
What happens next?
Once we have received both your statement and reference, we will email you to let you know that your application is complete and will be considered along with all other completed applications after the deadline has passed.
Applications are then anonymised and submitted to the scholarship panel to review, first individually and then together as a group. The panel will then agree their recommendations for awards to be made, and applicants will be notified of the outcome of their application.
Unsuccessful applicants may also be contacted by the student welfare team if their circumstances mean they may be able to access other forms of support.
Successful applicants should expect to receive the first instalment of their scholarship funds by the end of February. Any later instalments to be awarded are usually also paid directly in February each year.
