What will I learn?
Teaching will cover 6 main topics:
- Developing your own ability as a primary school physical education specialist
- Understanding primary school physical education
- Principles of pedagogy in primary school physical education
- Planning for continuity and progression in primary school physical education
- Using assessment to impact on learning and progress in primary school physical education
- Teaching primary school physical education
How will I learn?
You will complete 45 guided learning hours with a tutor and 96 independent learning hours, including the completion of individual learning tasks.
The guided learning hours will take place over 1 half day and 5 full days. Your tutor will guide you through content which you will access through York St John University's online learning platform. There will be some flexibility on when this material can be accessed, although we recommend setting aside assigned days for study.
Although you will be expected to carry out some work within your own time, additional release time will be needed for some of the tasks, including a half day prior to the course to complete a pre-course task and a half day to complete final assessment tasks.
Assessment
Assessments will be a mixture of formal written assignments, group based tasks, and group discussions. You will also be required to arrange 2 observations of your PE teaching by a colleague or senior leader within your own school during the course.
Session times
The first day is a welcome event in which we will introduce you to the course. We will also cover some of the content in this session.
Following this, you will start each of the other 5 study days with an introductory session from 9.30am to 11.00am. Throughout the rest of each day, you will be provided with time to work through pre-recorded course materials and complete online tasks. You will finish each day with a round up session from 4.00pm to 5.00pm, in which the assessment task for that unit will be explained.
