Library access for Alumni and members of the public

Find out how you can access the resources available to York St John Alumni, SCONUL borrowers from other institutions and to external borrowers.

Your access at a glance

We welcome alumni and visitors to make use of our library spaces and resources on our York Campus.

Your access to York St John University Library depends on your relationship with the University.

  • Alumni (former York St John students): You can continue to use the library after you graduate, including access to study spaces and some services.
  • SCONUL borrowers from other institutions: You can visit the library for study and apply for borrowing privileges via registration at your home institution.
  • Members of the public: You can visit the library for study and reference use of materials.

When the Library Services desk is closed you will need a valid York St John Library membership card to use the building. Please ask at the desk for more information.

The SCONUL Access scheme allows students and staff of member libraries reciprocal access to our York Campus library. As a SCONUL borrower you can:

York St John subscription online resources (ebooks, journals, databases) are restricted to current students and staff due to licence agreements. You may be able to use your home institution’s online resources via our guest WiFi.

Before you visit York St John University you must register with the SCONUL Access Scheme:

  • Go to the SCONUL access webpage.
  • Select your user type and your own home institution (university). Click Find (to identify the library you wish to visit).
  • From the results list select York St John University (i.e. the Library you wish to access) and complete the registration form.

If your home institution approves your request, you will receive an Approval Email. You must bring this email with you when you visit.

Planning your visit

Before visiting the library:

2. Bring appropriate ID:

  • Proof of identity (for example, passport or driving licence)
  • Proof of address (for example, utility bill)
  • Membership fee (where required)
