Payment for external examiners
Information on payment methods and amounts for external examiners employed by York St John University.
For any queries about payment, please contact your Programme Administration and Support Services (PASS) administrator.
On appointment, you will be/would have been asked to complete a bank details form. This enables us to make payments directly into your account on submission of your end of year report.
Fees
Fees for external examiners appointed from 1 June 2024 onwards
External examiners appointed from 1 June 2024 onwards will receive a set fee of £400 (for one programme). Payment is triggered on the timely receipt of the annual report.
A fee of £50 is paid for an additional programme(s) within the same subject area.
A fee of £150, plus expenses, is paid per visit. The timings and parameter of any such visit will be clearly set out and agreed with the Academic Registrar.
PGCE External Advisors will be paid £200.
Fees for external examiners appointed prior to 1 June 2024

Mentors
External examiners acting as mentors will receive a payment of £120 upon receipt of their mentor report.
Expenses
Expenses can be claimed for costs incurred for travel or subsistence. Our subsistence rates are noted on the back of the claim form for your information. All expenses claims must be submitted within 3 months of the work/visit taking place as per the University's Financial Regulations.
