When you start your course there may be some things which are familiar, such as giving presentations, writing reports or taking part in group discussions.
Other parts of studying may be new to you, or you may not have done for a long time. This could include preparing essays and other academic writing. We provide resources and support to help you develop your confidence in this area.
Help with academic writing
Study factsheets
Our study factsheets explain some of the academic terms you will come across on your course. For example, plagiarism, critical thinking and literature reviews.
The factsheets break down exactly what different terms mean and what is expected of you. Step by step guides for planning and structuring essays will help you with your assignments.
Worksheets are also available. These give you an opportunity to practise skills in your own time.
Referencing guides
We will ask you to use referencing in the essays and assignments on your course. Referencing is a way to acknowledge your sources and the ideas of other people. Including references also demonstrates that you have read around the subject area.
Different subjects ask you to write references in specific ways. You can find out which one you need to use from your tutors. Then you can find out how to include this in your essays using our referencing guides.
The guides break down all the different types of references you may need to include. They provide detailed examples and instructions to help you too.
Library services
The Library provides help with searching for resources and books. As well as useful online guides, specialist teams are on hand to help you develop your skills. You can have tutorials to help with academic work, software, subject resources and more.
If you are not sure where to go our Information Services team can point you in the right direction. Email them at support@yorksj.ac.uk.
