Preparing for CAS

What you need to prepare for CAS (Confirmation of Acceptance for Studies) and how to apply.

A member of staff and a student work together at a computer.

A CAS is a unique code which will enable you to apply for your Student visa online. York St John University will become your sponsor in the UK after we issue you with a CAS.

You must have a CAS number to be eligible to submit your Student visa application.

Before you can apply for your CAS you need to:

More information about these requirements can be found below.

Pre-CAS interview or questionnaire

You may be asked to complete a Pre-CAS interview or questionnaire through Enroly CAS Shield. This is the final step in your application process to York St John University.

It gives us the chance to get to know you better and understand your reasons for wanting to study in the UK and specifically at York St John. It will always be carried out in English, as this is the language you will be learning in whilst studying in the UK. This helps us to understand your level of spoken English.

If you are chosen for a Pre-CAS interview, it is not a test. Speak naturally, like you are talking to a teacher or relative. There is no need to memorise answers, just be yourself.

As part of the Student visa application, you could be selected by UK Visas and Immigration (UKVI) to attend a credibility interview. Your Pre-CAS procedures are particularly important to support and prepare you for this.

Example interview questions

Use the drop down menu below to explore examples of the types of questions you may be asked in your Pre-CAS interview.

We will ask you questions about why you want to study in the UK and particularly at York St John.

We will want to know:

  • How much you know about our university
  • What facilities really interest you
  • What you think about the teaching resources
  • What interests you about the city and location of the University
  • Your research into where you will live and how you will travel to campus

We will ask you about what attracted you to study your chosen course at York St John University as opposed to other institutions offering the same course in the UK and abroad.

We want to understand how this course relates to your previous and current studies or work experience, and how this course will shape and develop your career.

We will ask you questions about your background, study plans, career and finances.

This is all important to help us really understand your motivations for wanting to join us at York St John. It is also important to know how you plan to finance the course fees, living costs and accommodation payments. You may be asked to outline the total costs involved in studying here.

Upload required documents

Gather your required documents for your CAS and upload them to our Enroly CAS Shield Platform.

See the checklist below for further details.

Key document checklist

You must provide your original valid passport in support of your Student visa application.

If your passport will expire soon after you arrive in the UK, you may find it easier to renew your passport before you make your visa application and before you travel to the UK.

You will need to provide final academic transcripts and diplomas as evidence of your academic qualifications.

Visit our English Language requirements page for more information.

For a list of countries where you need a TB test for your UK visa application, visit the gov.uk website: Tuberculosis tests for visa applicants.

Although this is only applicable to some countries, your finances should be in place or proof should be able to be provided, if requested. To check whether you need to provide evidence, check the gov.uk website: Student visa - money you need.

As part of your Student visa application, you need to show you have enough money to pay for your course fees and living costs. The Home Office calls this the 'financial requirements'.

When submitting a Student visa application, you will need to submit evidence that you have sufficient funds to cover your tuition fees and living costs for the first year of your course.  You can find detailed guidance on supporting document requirements on the gov.uk website.

If you are using your parent or guardian(s)' funds, you will also need to include the following:

  • A letter from your parent or guardian(s) confirming that you are their child and that they will be
paying all your course fees and living costs.
  • Your original birth certificate with your name and their name (with an original translation, if not
in English) when applying outside the UK. You can use copies when applying in the UK.
  • Your parent or guardian(s)' financial documents

Maintenance and cost of living

In addition to demonstrating you have sufficient funds to pay the full first-year tuition fee, you will also need to show you have sufficient funds to cover your living costs.

The Home Office has a set fixed amount for the living cost requirement irrespective of whether you intend to live with family in the UK, or if you have paid for your accommodation in part or in full already.

Students studying at our York campus will need to show £1,136 for each month of your course:

9 months x £1,136 = £10,224

For students studying at our London campus, you will need to show that you have £1,483 for each month of your course for a minimum of nine months.

9 months x £1,483 = £13,347

Maintenance evidence requirements

You can use any 1 or more of these as evidence of your money:

  • An official financial government sponsorship or grant
  • A student loan from a government-sponsored loan company, or a regulated student loans scheme
  • Your own money
  • Your parent or guardian's money (if they provide a letter confirming they agree to you using it this way)
  • Your partner's money (if your partner is present in the UK or applying at the same time)

The following are not accepted as evidence:

  • Overdrafts
  • Bitcoin savings
  • Stocks and shares
  • Pensions
  • Bank accounts that are not regulated by the financial regulatory body in the country you're
    applying from
  • Bank accounts that don't use electronic record keeping

The money you are required to show can be in your bank account, your parent or guardian(s)' account or in a joint account with anyone, as long as you are named on the account.

Business accounts are not acceptable because the Immigration Rules (Appendix C, paragraph 1B) specify that accounts must be personal.

If you are being funded by a family member other than your parents, they will need to transfer the required funds into your bank account or use a joint account with your name on it, as their bank statements will not be accepted. Financial evidence from anyone other than you or your parent or guardian(s) will not be accepted by the Home Office.

The 28-day rule

Your financial documents must show the total amount of money required has been in your or your parent or guardian's account for at least 28 consecutive days, up to the date of the closing balance.

This means that the account must not have dropped below the amount that you need to show at any time during the 28-day period (not even for 1 day), or you will not meet the Home Office requirements and your application will be refused.

Your bank statement must be no more than 31 days old on the date you submit your application.

This is only applicable if you are using your parents or guardian's funds for proof of financial requirements.

If you are under 18 you will need to provide evidence of consent from your parent or guardian.

Pay your tuition fee deposit

All degree courses require a deposit of 50% of the first year's tuition fees. If you are on a 2 year MBA/MSc with a professional experience year, you must pay 50% of the total course fees as a deposit.

The required deposit amount is listed on your unconditional offer letter.

No deposit is needed for sponsored students, students with US federal loans, and students with Norwegian State Loans.

Please refer to the Funding, scholarships and tuition fees page for more information about our deposit and payment requirements.

Apply for your CAS

You can apply for your CAS after you have received your unconditional offer, provided the required documents and after your tuition fee deposit has been received by us.

We can start to generate CAS codes 6 months before your course start date.

If you have applied through one of our international partners, then our partner will submit the CAS application to us after you have passed all pre-visa checks.

If you applied to the University directly, a link to the CAS application form will be provided when you receive your unconditional offer.

After you've applied

Once we have received your CAS application, we operate a 48-hour turnaround standard. If your application is received on a Friday or if we are missing any documents, there may be a delay with issuing your CAS. If your deposit funds have not cleared, this can also prolong the process.

Your CAS will be sent to you via email.

You do not have to submit the CAS email to UKVI with your visa application. The CAS number itself is what is required for your Student visa.
