Rebecca Beggan

Senior Lecturer in Midwifery

Rebecca Beggan

I qualified as a registered midwife in 2005 from the University of Central England (now Birmingham City University). Once qualified, I worked at St George's hospital in South West London in a continuity of care team and then in a midwifery led birth centre. I soon developed an interest in social inequality and began working as an outreach midwife for Sure-Start in South West London.

I then moved to Manchester to commence a Specialist Midwife role, developing and implementing services to support families experiencing social inequalities and complexities. To explore my interest further, I studied for a MSc in Public Health. In 2015, I became a Family Nurse Partnership (FNP) Supervisor; implementing and delivering the FNP service for pregnant women under 20 across Preston and Burnley. I also have experience of leading safeguarding practice within midwifery services.

While in clinical practice I was a guest lecturer at the University of Salford and the University of York before finally making the full time transition into Midwifery education by initially joining the team at the University of York, where I studied for a Postgraduate Certificate in Academic Practice and then joining York St John University.

I continue to be a registered midwife along with being qualified to undertake the systematic examination of the newborn (NIPE).
