Careers support at York St John is provided by our team of specialist advisers.
They provide guidance and support for current students and graduates. You can access this support by speaking to an adviser, or through one of our other routes.

Careers appointments
Whether you are just getting started thinking about your future or have some clear ideas, our team are here to help. You can book a 1 to 1 appointment with a careers adviser to discuss your plans and next steps. Our advisers offer support with:
- Personalised careers guidance tailored to your needs
- Work-related experiences built into your degree course
- Inclusive and accessible support for all students
- Advice on starting your own business or going self-employed
- Making the move from student life to graduate work
- Navigating your career journey though resources and digital tools.
Appointments take place online or in person.
Handshake
Handshake is our dedicated online careers platform. On Handshake, you can book appointments with our Advisers, view job vacancies, and explore upcoming events and workshops.

Events and workshops
Our team runs a range of events both on campus and online to support your career development. These events connect you with useful information, graduate employers, and part-time job opportunities. Our events include:
- Fairs focused on part-time jobs, graduate roles, placements, global experiences, and volunteering
- Workshops designed to build your knowledge, boost your skills, and help you prepare for the world of work
Getting involved is a great way to meet new people, expand your network, and explore your options.
Jobs and opportunities
Our team can help you find work experience during your studies. This includes:
- Part time jobs: We have links with businesses in York and advertise part time jobs all year round. There are also part time jobs available within the University.
- Volunteering: Make a difference by volunteering and develop your transferable skills at the same time. We work with charities across York and can help you find the perfect opportunity.
- Internships: We offer multiple internship opportunities in teams around the University. Internships are usually flexible, paid, and are a great way to gain real-world job experience.
As well as helping you find the right role, our team can provide support with writing applications and preparing for interviews.

The Kickstart Programme
Kickstart offers comprehensive support to help you explore and grow your entrepreneurial ideas, whether you're just getting started or ready to take your business to the next level.
Through Kickstart, you can meet 1 to 1 with our advisers to work on your business plans, collaborate with fellow students on your projects, attend enterprise workshops, and more. The Kickstart Fund is available to final year students and postgraduates and allows you to apply for dedicated funding for your business.

Study abroad and global opportunities
If you want to explore the world during your studies, we're here to help. We support students with a range of global opportunities, from summer schools and paid short-term experiences to full-year study abroad placements.
Our opportunities include:
- Community engagement projects in Fiji, Bali, Cambodia, India, Nepal, Peru, Tanzania, Thailand, Uganda, Kenya, or Sri Lanka
- International summer schools in South Korea or Japan
- Teaching English in Thailand
- Summer camp work in the USA
- Study abroad during your degree in Asia, North America, or Europe
We can also support you to apply for funding for international opportunities through the government's Turing Scheme.
