Introduction to British Sign Language (BSL) and Deaf Awareness

Free 6 week enrichment courses for A level students.

These free British Sign Language (BSL) courses are for A level students. Places can be booked by a teacher.

Our Introduction to British Sign Language and Deaf Awareness course takes place online, using Microsoft Teams. The course runs for 6 weeks and sessions take place on a Wednesday afternoon, 4.00pm to 5.00pm.

The course is free.

We have 2 available start dates for you to choose from:

  • Course 1: Wednesday 1 October to Wednesday 12 November 2025
  • Course 2: Wednesday 12 November to Wednesday 17 December 2025

Please note that both of our courses are now full.

Participants who complete the course will be provided with a certificate of participation.

How to book a place for a student

Bookings should be made by a teacher.

If your students would like to sign up for either of these courses, please contact Dr Nikki Swift n.swift@yorksj.ac.uk

Deadlines for signing up:

  • Course 1: Sign up by Tuesday 30 September
  • Course 2: Sign up by Friday 7 November

Places will be allocated on a first-come, first-served basis.

When you book, we will need the student's email address and full name (for the certificate of completion). Certificates will be issued to the teacher on completion of the course for distribution to the students. Student email addresses are required to be enrolled on the Teams site for the course.
