The creative and cultural industries are worth £108bn to the UK economy and employ 2.3 million people. They provide the news that informs our democracy, the designs that shape our cities, and are an essential positive force for society. Through this MA, you will develop your critical understanding and awareness of the key issues shaping these industries, exploring cross-disciplinary views on the social, economic, and technological contexts which they operate.

Course overview
This innovative MA has been designed to develop the knowledge and skills that will help future leaders of the creative and cultural industries to excel. Aligning practical experience and industry contacts with a deeper understanding of these fields, the aim of this course is to develop your critical understanding and awareness of the key issues shaping these areas today.
The course centres on the management, production, policy, and value of creative and cultural activity. You will develop the knowledge, skills and confidence required to contribute effectively to leadership, management and professional practice across both sectors. You will also develop critical perspectives on creative and cultural work by applying conceptual frameworks and methods to real-world contexts.
Adopting an evidence-informed and critically reflective approach, this course will enable you to engage with theory and practice through skills of analysis, interpretation, synthesis, and evaluation. Designed to bring together cross-disciplinary expertise in creative thinking, cultural studies, and business, the programme is delivered in collaboration between our School of Humanities and York Business School. This course will allow you to work with a range of external partners to create and apply knowledge in different industry contexts, whilst learning about the theoretical underpinnings of the current creative and cultural trends.
Course structure
How you will study
You can study this postgraduate course full time or part time. This allows you to fit your studies around other commitments.
If you choose to study full time the course will take 1 year to complete, or 2 if you choose a year in industry. You will study:
- 5 compulsory modules, including a final Capstone Project module OR a Business Consultancy Project
If you choose to study part time the course will take 2 years to complete and the modules will be split across both years.

Compulsory module
This module explores the relationship between creativity and culture through an interdisciplinary lens. You will explore key concepts around heritage, collections, archives, and galleries. Through this, you will learn the theoretical foundations needed to generate, interrogate, and re-imagine perspectives within cultural activities and industries.

Compulsory module
This module will equip you with a critical understanding of creative and cultural economies and the skills to analyse and navigate their complex ecosystems. Explore how cultural infrastructures, networks, and stakeholders interact to shape opportunities and challenges within the creative industries. You will examine the dynamics of policy, funding landscapes, and organisational structures, alongside the realities of freelance and entrepreneurial practice.

Compulsory module
This module aims to develop your understanding of professional practice in the creative industries, including the challenges and opportunities of portfolio careers, creative identity, and self-management. Fostering reflective practice as a core professional skill, this module enables you to critically evaluate your development and articulate your creative ethos, and prepares you to navigate the complexities of contemporary creative work.

Compulsory module
The creative and cultural industries are shaped by social, technological, and environmental change. Anticipating the impact of these shifts is essential as they create the narratives and design of future strategies that will connect key audiences to their meaning. The aim of this module is to equip you with the foresight and strategic thinking to identify and translate future challenges into opportunities.

Compulsory module
During your capstone project you will develop your studies in an area of your choice, through negotiating and developing an in-depth research topic. This will be in the form of individual study and tutor led lectures and workshops. During this self-directed study module, you will work independently to produce an academic dissertation or project with the support of an academic supervisor.
If you choose to study the MA with Professional Experience, you will complete an additional module.
You will work independently to produce a consultancy project during your placement year. Throughout this module an academic supervisor will support your independent study. On this project you will reflect on your experiences on placement and apply what you have learnt. You will:
- Engage with business research methods and practice
- Negotiate a scope of work
- Collect and analyse data
- Prepare and present a consulting report

Professional Experience
Choosing to study the MA with Professional Experience can give you a competitive edge in your future career. It is an opportunity to apply the knowledge and skills you have learned in the workplace. You will be on placement for a full academic year, after you have successfully completed all of the taught modules.

We use a wide variety of assessment types, which help you to develop skills relevant to the workplace. They include:

You will receive detailed feedback on assessments to help you develop and continuously improve your performance from your module tutors. Advice will be provided in relation to development, further areas for research and guidance on how to enhance your subject knowledge.

If your degree is in an unrelated subject, but you can provide evidence of relevant professional experience, your application may still be considered.

If English is not your first language you will need to show that you have English Language competence at IELTS level 6.0 (with no skill below 5.5) or equivalent.
Accreditation of Prior Experiential Learning (APEL)
If you do not have traditional qualifications, you might be able to provide evidence of professional experience in the subject as an alternative way to meet the entry requirements. This is called Accreditation of Prior Experiential Learning (APEL). Appropriate references and records of employment would need to be presented to support your case for admission.
