This course will help you to develop your health coaching skills. Health coaching is a way of communicating with and supporting patients. You will learn how to equip them with the knowledge, skills and confidence to become active participants in managing their own health.

Who is this course for?

This course is for all allied health professionals with a basic knowledge and understanding of using a health coaching approach within a clinical setting and who would like to develop their skills and knowledge.

How will I learn?

You will learn through a mixture of workshops which you can choose from. You will also take park in peer-observed health coaching in real-life simulated clinical scenarios.

What will I learn?

You will choose 1 workshop in the morning and 1 workshop in the afternoon, and you can select from the below topics. 

Workshop 1 (You can choose from A or B)

A: Health coaching: a review of the key skills needed to maximise the effectiveness of a behavioural change conversation.

B: Facilitators and barriers to using a health coaching approach including the important role of health literacy. 

Workshop 2 (please choose C or D)

C: Stages of change (transtheoretical model) – explore how to adapt your approach depending on which stage the patient you are working with is at, to maximise the effectiveness of the interaction.

D: Drama triangle/ transactional analysis – explore how knowledge of these ways of analysing conversations can support you to maximise the effectiveness of the interaction.

Course leader biographies

Chris Newbury

Chris is a Lecturer in Physiotherapy at York St John University, teaching across undergraduate and postgraduate courses. Chris has integrated simulation communication teaching within the Physiotherapy courses and is keen to explore its impact on developing complex communication skills in safe learning environments. With a focus on leadership and communication, Chris examines how interactions shape clinical relationships and support students in becoming reflective, compassionate practitioners.

Caroline Brown

Caroline is currently working as an Allied Health Professional (AHP) Clinical Fellow in Health Coaching alongside her Extended Scope Practitioner Role in Spasticity Management at York and Scarborough Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust. Following completion of a master's module in Health Coaching and Behavioural Change 5 years ago Caroline has led a project to support AHPs to integrate a Health Coaching approach within their practice, and now lectures on a postgraduate programme. She is very passionate about the benefits of using this approach and continues to strive to ensure this learning is shared with other members of the multidisciplinary teams to maximise effectiveness.
