Resource Sharing Service

If you can't find what you need within the library collections, the Resource Sharing Service can help. We can help you find and access the resources that are important for your individual study and research.

Our service

The Resource Sharing Service can provide resources for study and research. This includes books, book chapters, journal articles, and theses.

The Resource Sharing Service uses a variety of methods to provide resources, including:

  • Interlibrary loan: Borrowing resources through our network of partner libraries and institutions
  • Open Access resources
  • SCONUL Access: A reciprocal scheme which allows many university library users to borrow or use books and journals at other libraries
  • Recommending public libraries, archives and special collections
  • Acquisition (if acquisition is the most appropriate and cost-effective way)

To make a request, please fill in the form above.

Please search the library catalogue before requesting. We may already have access to what you need.

We aim to supply resources electronically as soon as possible, but supply times can vary so please allow at least 2 weeks. Sometimes a resource may only be available as a physical loan, which must be collected from the Library Services Desk in Fountains building on our York campus.

This service is available to York St John University students and staff, except for students on short courses. External borrowers, including SCONUL borrowers from other institutions, cannot use the Resource Sharing Service. The Library covers any resource sharing costs. There is no annual limit on requests, but there is a maximum of 10 active requests at one time.

Registered Accessibility Service users will be sent resources that are tailored to your needs. You must be registered with the Library's Accessibility Support services to receive these services.

If you have any questions, please contact the Resource Sharing Service at librarycontent@yorksj.ac.uk.

Requesting a book or book chapter

Books will be provided as eBooks where possible. A link to the eBook will be emailed to your University email address.

If an eBook is unavailable, a print copy will be sourced from another library. Print books can be collected from the Library Services Desk in Fountains. To renew a print book please email librarycontent@yorksj.ac.uk.

Physical loans are currently only available for staff and students based on the York campus. If you request a book chapter, it will be delivered as a PDF to your University email address.

Requesting a journal article

Please provide as much information as you can, including volume, issue and page numbers.

The article will be delivered as a PDF to your University email address.

Requesting a thesis

Some theses may be available freely online. We recommend accessing PhD and Research theses by using a Google search that limits your search to university websites along with the word 'thesis': Accessing PhD and Research Theses.

If a thesis is not available online, please complete the Resource Sharing Service request form and we will explore other access options.

Theses will be sent to you as a PDF to your University email address.

Overdue physical loans

Resource Sharing Services resources do not automatically renew like York St John University library loans so please email librarycontent@yorksj.ac.uk for a renewal before the due date.

Overdue items are charged at £1 per item per day. Accruing fines of £10.00 will suspend your borrowing privileges and your library loans will also stop automatically renewing.
