Emily Howarth

Widening Participation Officer

Hi there! I’m Emily, and I am one of the Widening Participation Officers. I completed my undergraduate degree here at YSJ in British Sign Language, Deaf Studies, and Linguistics, and am currently finishing my MRes in Applied Linguistics. I started working at YSJ as a Student Ambassador in 2022, and am very excited to now be joining the Student Recruitment and Widening Participation team.

In my role, I oversee variety of projects aimed to support students from underrepresented backgrounds make informed decisions about their futures. This includes working with mature students, and as a mature student myself, I really enjoy supporting people through the decision to return to learning. I will also be helping to organise our annual Summer School, which sees year 12 students from all over the UK participate in a weeklong residential at YSJ, giving them the opportunity to experience life as a university student. I also support a plethora of other events, including various school visits, Open Days and Decision days, careers fairs, and UCAS events.

Outside of work, I love spending time in my garden, and I am an enthusiastic member of my village gardening club. I also have a background in theatre and comedy, and spend a lot of my time watching various productions in and around York.
