Dr Judy Purton

Senior LecturerProfessional Practice Placement Coordinator

School of Science, Technology and Health

Postgraduate Research Supervisor

I became a full-time lecturer in physiotherapy in 2003 when I came to York St John University. I teach across both the BHSc and MSc (pre-registration) physiotherapy programmes, and also post-graduate modules. My main interests lie in neurology and, in particular, stroke. In my role as placement coordinator, I liaise with external partners in healthcare to procure placements for all the physiotherapy students and to support students and clinical educators throughout the placement experience.

Before moving into lecturing I was a clinical team leader in neurosciences in a large hospital trust, leading a team in stroke rehabilitation, neuro-rehabilitation, neurology, neurosurgery, neuro-surgical intensive care, and spinal injuries. Prior to this, I held a variety of senior physiotherapy positions, including wheelchairs and special seating, stroke rehabilitation, amputee rehabilitation, elderly care and musculoskeletal out-patients.

My main teaching responsibilities are in anatomy and physiology, neurology, management of falls, reflective practice, evidence-based practice, and preparation for professional practice placement. I also supervise undergraduate and postgraduate students undertaking research.

My research interests lie in stroke. I completed my doctoral thesis in 2016 – ‘Stroke Survivors’ Experiences of Upper Limb Dysfunction: A Longitudinal, exploratory study’.

I am involved in a team conducting research into self-management and MS.

I am an inaugural member of the Applied Clinical Research in Neuro-rehabilitation Group at Keele University.
