My research explores the relationships between human and nature, with a particular interest in how landscapes and communities have been interacting in the face of socio-environmental changes and challenges. Drawing on my academic background in geography and planning, I explore how policy and practice can support more sustainable human-environment relationships.
During my PhD at the University of Otago, New Zealand, I developed a policy framework to enhance the sustainability of UNESCO Global Geoparks through the lens of intangible cultural heritage. I subsequently undertook a two-year postdoctoral research project in South Africa, focusing on leisure and conservation policy within national parks, with a particular emphasis on Kruger National Park.
Applying an interdisciplinary approach, my research areas include sustainability and policy, climate adaptation, heritage (both cultural and natural) management, nature-based/eco-tourism, and community development. Using participatory methodologies, my research has linked me to diverse projects and interdisciplinary teams across the UK, New Zealand, Iran, Kenya, South Africa, and Mozambique, where I have worked alongside practitioners, Indigenous tribes, and policymakers. I also have worked as a consultant and policy advisor for industry and international organisations, particularly UNESCO, IUCN, and the GGN, helping to bridge research, policy, and practice. As Co-Lead of the AMES and Co-Lead of York St John University's engagement with the United Nations-supported initiative PRME, I am committed to creating research that delivers meaningful impact beyond academia.
