I am Associate Dean at York Business School, where I also lead on Teaching and Learning. My background is in economics and finance, and over the years I've combined my academic career with research, leadership, and mentoring.
My research covers areas such as monetary policy, financial markets, and more recently issues of social justice and equality. I've published on topics ranging from payday lending to sustainability in higher education, and I've been involved in projects including the creation of a start-up centre and research into pay inequalities among army veterans.
I completed the Aurora Leadership Programme, which has been an important step in shaping how I approach leadership and support colleagues. Mentoring is something I value highly, and I've worked with colleagues through fellowship applications and diversity schemes across different universities.
What motivates me the most is helping students and staff to develop, creating opportunities for others, and making sure that the work we do in higher education connects with global challenges.
I've been teaching in higher education since 2011, mainly in economics and finance. I currently lead the BSc Economics programme and teach modules such as Principles of Applied Economics, Economic Policy and Practice, and Experimental Economics. Over the years, I've developed a teaching approach that focuses on making complex concepts accessible and relevant, encouraging students to apply theory to current events and think critically about economic issues. I enjoy creating interactive learning experiences, including practical exercises, case studies, and discussions that help students engage deeply with the material.
Beyond my own teaching, I support colleagues as Teaching and Learning Lead, mentoring staff and helping them explore new approaches in the classroom or work toward Higher Education Fellowship. I am also involved in initiatives to enhance teaching quality and student experience across the School, including curriculum development and embedding sustainability and work readiness into learning. Seeing both students and colleagues grow, gain confidence, and achieve their goals is what I find most rewarding.
My research interest focuses on economics and finance, exploring how economic systems and policies affect individuals, businesses, and society. I have worked on projects examining monetary policy, financial markets, and the social impacts of financial products, including payday lending. I am particularly interested in applied research that addresses social and economic inequalities, such as investigating pay disparities among underrepresented groups in the military.
I enjoy working collaboratively and supporting others in research. I currently supervise a PhD student researching greenwashing in bond markets. My research aims to be rigorous and relevant, with practical applications in policy and society.
Alongside my leadership and mentoring work, I regularly present at conferences, review articles for journals like Economics of Energy and Environmental Policy, and am a member of professional bodies including the Royal Economic Society.
