Dr Angharad Hampshire

Lecturer, Creative Writing

I am a writer, journalist and audio producer, who teaches across both undergraduate and postgraduate Creative Writing programmes.

My debut novel The Mare (Northodox Press, 2024) was shortlisted for the Walter Scott Prize for Historical Fiction 2025 and reviewed in the Times as “extraordinarily powerful”.

I have previously worked as a producer for BBC Radio 4 and the World Service in London, honorary lecturer in journalism at the University of Hong Kong, and regular contributor to the South China Morning Post and Muse magazine in Hong Kong.

Since moving back to the UK in 2022, I have worked as a Story Fellow for StoryArcs at Bath Spa University in conjunction with York St John University on the New Writing North: A Writing Chance programme, which aims to open access to the writing industries for writers from working-class and lower-income backgrounds. During this time, I also worked as a podcast producer for Storyglass for BBC Radio 4, New Writing North, the University of Northumbria, and ran podcasting courses for New Writing North and the University of York.

I hold a Doctor of Arts in Creative Writing from the University of Sydney (2021). My doctorate examined the portrayal of the female concentration camp guard in Holocaust historiography and literature.
